I strolled into my local Best Buy today, and what do I see? In addition to one Radeon 9800XT for $499.99, they had one eVGA GeForce FX5700 Ultra on the shelf for $219.99 with a $20 rebate. The place-holder for the 9600XT was there, advertising a $199.99 price, but no boxes to be seen! Congrats to nVidia for delivering as promised. Let's hope ATi can get the 9600XT on the shelves by next week sometime.

Of course, the damned salesman encouraged me to buy a 9600 PRO. He told me I could overclock it and make it faster than a 9800 PRO.

My response:

haha, 9600 Pro faster than a 9800 Pro, the clock speeds would have to be like 700 Core, 850 Memory...

Did you ask him if the 9800 Pro be overclocked faster than a 1200 Pro XT LSS Radioactive Neutron Plus?

Since the memory of the R9600 Pro is 128bits wide, to make it equivalent to a R9800Pro, which is 256bits wide, you'd need effectively 650Mhz * 2 = 1300Mhz memory clock.

Hmm, no 5700s on Pricewatch. There are 9600XTs listed on pricewatch, but they don't seem to be in stock anywhere.

Saw a 5700 for $219 at BB today. Almost exchanged my 9600 Pro for it instead of another 9600. Got a $30 refund because of a price drop on the 9600 Pro, so I won't complain.

Trust Me ;) I paid 500 bucks to ensure the latest/greatest. If you were to suggest that a 200.00 dollar card would even come close......

IN YOUR WILDEST DREAMS :):):) LOL

You've also got to take into consideration that the 9800 Pro has 8 pipes... versus the 4 the 9600 Pro has

I'm still waiting for the 9600XT, hopefully they will indeed ship them this or next week.

What I wanna know is, why did the 9800XT get officially released like 2-3 weeks before the NV38, but my work had 5950's in stock the next day after the NV38 was officially released but still no 9800XT's till last weekend

The salesman told you to overclock? I wonder how his boss would feel if you then RMA'd the card on the grounds that the saleman gave you crappy advice?

Maybe more people have already bought them instead of the 5700's?
