I can't believe this happened. I was using my computer and heard a Ker-Plunk from inside. It turns out that one of the plastic tabs which held my HSF on my processor broke, and the HSF fell off!

I was using a HSF that was attached by one plastic tab on each side of the socket. However, there are three tabs on each side of the socket. I need some HSF options that have a clip which uses all three tabs (if any exist). Since only one of the middle tabs broke, I'm hoping that the other two will be fine to seat the HSF. I don't need an extremely fancy HSF, just something that will work, and if you can provide a link as to where to get it, I'd be mighty appreciative.

Also if anyone has other advice on what to do, I'll take all the help I can get. Right now I'm just hoping my processor will still function after all of this. I turned off my computer as quickly as possble, and atleast I don't see any obvious scorch marks.

Thanks for the help.

FYI:
AMD 900Mhz T-bird (not o/c) and stock HSF

Man, thats the first time i've heard of that happening. Sorry for your misfortune. I dont have any suggetions for you but i'll bump this up to the top, maybe someone else knows.

You might also try this in cpu/processors forum. Those guys are always using different types of htsk/fan combos.

good luck

Try this: Anandtech cooler roundup. It is slightly old, but it is still largely valid.
There are both heatsinks that screw into the motherboard and ones that have 3 openings on each side to clip on the socket.

Sorry this happened to you. A 900 T-Bird may have survived this, especially since you said you were quick in turning it off.

The Taisol CGK 760092 and 742092 uses all three clips on both sides,AMD approved as well.
Go here for Taisol info .

Thanks for the replies guys. Just a quick update:

I found an Antec Jet Cooler at Best Buy and it clips onto two of the tabs. That way there's atleast a connection on one of the tabs. Installed it, and everything works fine! The CPU is still good! A definite relief.

Anyways, thanks to those who replied (or atleast bumped it up for me). I may still look into getting a HSF that clips onto all 3 tabs. I'm a little nervous about the one I have now only connected to one of the side tabs.

That's one of those moments when a slower CPU is better.
A 1.4 GHz T-Bird would be dead, and would have taken the motherboard with it.

Glad it survived.

Wow, that's the first time I've heard of a HSF falling off as well! One of my biggest computer-related fears!:Q Glad your CPU didn't fry! Kinda surprised, too. Good luck with your search for a 3-hole HSF.
