To everyone who bought the free after rebate modem at CompUSA this past Sunday or Monday:

The rebate form for the BestData Mach2 56k modem (the one that was free after rebate) says to send in the ORIGINAL sales receipt. I quote from the back of the form:

Rebate must include ... original dated sales receipt (copies will not be accepted).

The parenthesis and underlining are theirs. It also says "original sales receipt" on the front of the form. This was the only rebate that I saw that said you had to send in the original.

Just a heads up for everyone so they don't lose $30 on a technicality.

Yup...
I did get that modem a while back on the 100% rebate deal. It required the original reciept. This rebate also took over 4 months to arrive. That modem works alright, but doesnt work with win2K.. they arent planning on writing any drivers for it either.

I think it should be illegal for rebate companies to require you to send the original recept. What if you bought other items at the same time, especially expensive ones, that require you to produce the original recipt in case you need to return, exchange, or get repair work done under warranty? If you sent it to the rebate company, you're screwed.

Requiring you to send the original receipt sounds like a tactic to discourage buyers from submitting their rebate requests, or worse yet, a dirty trick to snare people into submitting requests with copies of their receipts that will get rejected. Obviously, an original UPC code and a COPY of the receipt should be proof enough that you bought it and can't return it.

Best data modems are OK but their handling of rebates borders on criminal fraud. In my experience they are one of the worst. If your rebate doesn't come in a timely manner take in your copies and get the store manager to reimburse you. You can call CompUSA corporate HQ and explain how Best Data's rebate policies reflect badly on CompUSA. You can also let Best Data know that you are calling CompUSA's cheif purchasing person and encouraging him to not buy from Best Data.

According to CompUSA, all their rebate people accept copies of the receipt. There was a little note posted at the rebate center (where all the rebate forms were). So I sent in a copy. If they have a problem with that, I'll fight it later.

I concur with jbserra. I bought about $130 worth of items from Compusa on Sun. and just about every one had some type of rebate. Spoke to store manager and he stated that all their suppliers have agreed to take a copy of receipt. And he assured me corporate would stand behind that. By the way, the PC133 64MB memory they had for $29.99 with full MIR came with INFINEON 7.5ns chips!, and they allowed 2 per customer.
