Yeah, it's a really issue which could cause a problem for a few people...who'd then get new cards under warranty since it's a design glitch. In the meantime, the ATI clowns yuck it up and yank their cranks as if they're all special cuz they bought a 9700. Bleah.

The NV30 is snake-bitten bad juju on it and the NV35 can't come out soon enough, so we can see what's what with working HW.
Thanks for "mellowing" your reply a little. 😛

Even reasonable Ati "fans" (even me - :Q ) - are TIRED of this nonsense. HOWEVER, I'd like to remind you that Nvidia fans are NO different and we will AGAIN (my prediction for the NEAR future) see YOU "yucking it up and yanking your cranks as if you're all special cuz you bought an NV35. Bleah."

So DON'T FORGET what you wrote (because I'll be here to remind you - even if I get an NV35). 😛

I see a triple post :Q:
I see messages from dead posters . . . so what? 😛

I thought Zuni fixed the multiple-post bug long ago.

Perhaps I can turn to the IraqiInfoMinister for info or denials . . . 😀

There are alot more there also, you can even make your own.
I know . . . the 'nvidia one' was kinda clever (I guess you are also referring to the IraqiInfoMinister "tool"). 😀

That is what I am worring about - this is gonna get "abused". 😀

I just didn't expect a "triple-post".

Gee....they block AMB vs. Intel threads, but the ATI fanboys get to spank their monkeys freely, don't they?

Yes informing people that their $400 nVidia cards could potentially fry during SS mode is ATI fanboy flaming!

I think he's trying to help inform people to save their cards.

Maybe nVidia fanboys shouldn't take such offense to people pointing out their product flaws.

Heh, that's interesting since I haven't seen a single FX5800 owner say, "Golly gee, thanks for saving my card!!!" Considering this issue in its best case scenario would affect 6% of FX owners (100K NV30 vs. 1.5 million FX cores shipped in March), I'd say the title is misleading and exaggerated.

DefRef's assessment is right on, since no one who has bothered to reply to this thread, myself included, is affected by it. Instead, you have the usual ATi Fanboys attracted to the two letters "FX" like flies to a turd.

As for the driver comments, its a simple Windows fix that applies to an even smaller percentage of FX owners who need to meet 2 prerequisites:
1) Using a screensaver, which is often replaced by standby.
2) Using a 3D screensaver, which cuts your potential "victims" even further.

Regardless, its a non-issue that has served no purpose other than to provide an arena for the usual poo-flinging fest associated with the FX.

FU. I posted this when it broke and included FX in the title because I wasn't sure it was limited to the Ultras. Better to err on the side of caution than for someone who may have needed this info miss it and fry their card. I aint no fanboy, and you can suck it.

Well in that case let me educate you since you obviously didn't bother researching which FX this affects and how this "problem" might come about. The FX 5800 reference is cooled by the FlowFX, which is a variable speed cooling system controlled by software drivers. The fan is nearly silent in 2D, where the core and memory will clock down to 300/300. When a 3D application is launched, this triggers the driver software (probably a simple driver code detecting direct3D or OpenGL extensions) to throttle the fan and increase the 5800 FX's core and memory clock frequencies to their standard 400/400MHz or 500/500MHz operating frequencies in 3D. This is obviously an oversight in the driver controlling the fan's speed, and nothing more.

Considering the overwhelming majority of the FX line will use either conventional cooling fans (as seen on previous cards like the GF4's or Radeons) or no cooling fans at all, just heatsinks, this is clearly limited to 5800 FXs using the FlowFX reference cooler or similar variant.

Now that you know, will you change the title? Didn't think so. Stupidity is excusable, ignorance in the face of fact is not. Which do you fit? Judging by your response to my post, which wasn't even directed at you, its hard for me to say.
