Should I just get the cheapest name-brand memory that is compatible with my board or is it worth spending the extra cash on faster RAM (either low latency or higher rated like DDR433) ?

The on-board memory controller on the Athlon64 really likes fast tight timings. PC3200 CAS2.5 or better is what you should get. If you want to do any mild overclocking, get PC3500 CAS2 (Mushkin level1 or Kingston Hyperx)

If your on a tight budget, recommend you go with cas 2.5 but I would not go with cas 3.0. PC3200 cas 2.5 should work with A64.
