Impedance problem?

I have a strange problem.

Long ago I had some Ethernet cable run from the house to the garage. I installed keystone jacks on both ends. Cable is stamped 4PR 24 AWG U1P CMX CAT5E 350 MHz OUTDOOR DIRECT BURIAL. The cable goes up an interior wall to attic, into a PVC pipe to the garage and out into open air in the garage. The pipe also contains a telephone line and some TV coax cable. In the garage a home made Ethernet cable running from an IP camera is plugged into the keystone jack on the cable from the house. In the house a commercial Ethernet cable goes from the keystone jack to my switch. I have a perfect image from the camera.

Decided I wanted to go PoE. Got a couple of PoE cameras and a PoE switch. Installed one camera using the cable type mentioned below. It works fine. PoE light is on on the switch and I have picture.

Now working on garage cam. Plug cam into garage jack. Moved cord in the house from regular switch to PoE switch. No PoE light on the switch. Camera not functioning. Disconnected everything from CMX cable and attached a CompuCable transmitter/receiver tester to cable. Lights cycle correctly but they are very dim. I have a cord I made that is twice as long as the CMX made out of cable labeled E171480 VERIFIED (UL) CM OR MP. CAT 5e TO TIA/EIA-568A 24AWG 4UTP C(UL) 0898FT 2001. The tester lights are very bright when test is run. Run the cable from the PoE switch to the garage camera. PoE light comes on and camera works.


Any idea what is the deal on the CMX cable and PoE? I also replaced the keystone jacks with new ones that use punchdown technology. No joy.

Could be bad (or low quality) cable. If it was buried in proper conduit, you could just use the existing cable to pull new wire through the conduit. Direct bury is harder to replace, and it's possible that it was installed improperly or someone or something has nicked the cable (rodent or tree root, for example), breaking the seal and causing a short in the cable.

It is not buried. It goes up the inside of an interior wall and thru a PVC pipe on top of my patio cover to the garage. I have temporarily run another type of cable to the garage along the underside of the patio cover. It is working fine.

I plan to have some electrical work done and will have a new cable run and the old one removed. It will be inspected very carefully.

I am an idiot. In preparing for the electrician tomorrow I figured out what the problem is. See diagram.


I thought D was the other end of B. Tester showed dim lights because it was actually going through the router. And the router does not supply power to A-B so, of course, the cam did not work


I will have the electrician run a new cable from the Den to Garage in the PVC and it will be connected to the PoE switch.

Would have been cheaper to get a Poe injector and attach to A end.

Even if it was D you will still not get power on B.

Electrician is doing other work already. Was going to remove what I thought was D-B and run new. Now it will be just run new Den to Garage. PoE switch already in place and being used for another cam.

Work is done.

Pulled cat-5e to external garage from Den.
Pulled cat-5e to internal garage from Den.
Converted dryer AC circuit to 2 circuits for new sockets in 2 locations.

Will leave A-B for something else. Not sure if I will remove the temp Den-External Garage cat-5e stapled to the underside of the patio cover.
