My '06 doesn't have this "feature", my fob died a few months back and I was able to unlock with the key and start right up.

This.

The battery is only for the transmitter for the keyless entry, doors, trunk, panic button, etc.

The security system uses a passive RFID that is energized wirelessly by radio waves from the transponder in the car. You do not need a FOB battery to manually open the doors or start the ignition using the actual key, and the security system should step aside automatically just by the mere fact that the real original key is in the vicinity.

His immobilizer is FOB based, not key based. Press lock and it is activated, press unlock and it is deactivated for 30 seconds. It has to have batteries to operate.

It is because he has a UK spec car. They have a set of semi quirements for alarm systems for insurance purposes. Seems like Subaru has taken them a step farther then some though 😛

Mazdaspeed6 is strange. If the fob is dead, you must use the key to open the trunk (and close it) and then the key will start the car. This is for the keyless system. It is all in the manual however. I never had a battery go dead yet. The manuals said the batteries last one year but all of mine still have factory batteries.

I would just throw an extra set of batteries in the glove box. I agree though, that would annoy me to no end. Having to start the car in under a minute after unlocking it or it won't start? That's just stupid.

I agree. What if ya just want to get something out of the car and it takes longer than 30 seconds to find it.

Just be thankful you don't have a Saab. If the batteries die in my fob it doesn't matter if I'm in the car, it will not start. The fob is the key.

In my Jeep the FOB is the key also. However, I think the FOB is RFID, which doesn't require batteries. The batteries in the FOB are only to work the remote.

However, I have never tried to start the Jeep without a battery in the FOB.
