I was actually thinking of subscribing because I enjoy its hosting services, anonymous uploads, direct links to files, decent API.

I got my recently-paid fee refunded.

Honestly, I think I'd still rather give them my money. They've earned it.

I've purchased T-Shirts as well from them in the past though, and will continue to do so.

IMOP it's a smart move. Their data is becoming cheaper to store and imgur is a huge community as well which has advertisements for the main image pages with comments.
