IMEI numbers

I want to sell my IPhone 6, which is still under contract, but the buyer insist on me giving him the IMEI number. Please tell me what this person needs this information for?

to check if it has been stolen or black listed.

both of which would stop him from being able to use the phone.

Also to check on carrier financing, which I believe if you're on Verizon or Sprint, prevents the phone from being used on a different account till it's paid off.

If it's still under contract you would have to pay it off first before selling.
