The original movie is bad, but I don't like David Lynch. The sci fi channel movies are even worse though.

I grew up on Herbert's books and love all of them. Man was an all-time genius writer. If they can do a Peter Jackson's LOTR type movie I'm all for it but it's a really hard series to turn into a movie due to the high concept/cerebral nature of the story. It would be far harder to do than LOTR. I'd say there is like a .1% chance someone can pull it off.

The two mini series from the sci-fi channel pulls it off IMO. It just needs more budget for cast, special effects, etc. Apart from DigDog, I wonder if anyone disliked the mini-series while liking the books.

Side note - my brother tells me to watch the documentary "Jodorowsky's Dune"

oh man, that looks like it would have been epicly amazing or epicly bad....but in a very good way!

Jodorowsky proceeded to approach, among others, Virgin Records with the prog rock groups Tangerine Dream, Gongand Mike Oldfield before settling on Pink Floyd and Magma for some of the music; artists H. R. Giger, Chris Foss and Jean Giraud for set and character design; Dan O'Bannon for special effects; and Salvador Dalí, Orson Welles, Gloria Swanson, David Carradine, Mick Jagger, Udo Kier, Amanda Lear and others for the cast.[4]

.... Jodorowsky's script would result in a 14-hour film ("It was the size of a phone book", Herbert later recalled). Jodorowsky took creative liberties with the source material, but Herbert said that he and Jodorowsky had an amicable relationship.[citation needed]

I found them unwatchable. I've made it about 20-30 minutes a couple times and gave up. Bad acting, bad cgi, terrible costumes, terrible sets etc.

I enjoyed them, perhaps mostly for the story itself. I just love the Dune universe.

But you also have to remember the circumstances: they were produced by and aired on Sci-Fi Channel (now SeeFee, err.. SyFy) circa 2000 (2003 for Children of Dune). I don't recall the acting being terrible but it's been a long time.

This was before the revolution in high-caliber cable channel productions, when production and budget were minimal. Each of the mini-series apparently were shot on a $20M budget (each, not total). For what would otherwise be a series of epics, that's probably too paltry to expect a Hollywood-level final product. We're spoiled now.

And hell, both Dune and Children of Dune won Emmy Awards for Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a miniseries or movie (Dune also won for Outstanding Cinematography). They looked incredibly dated the last time I did watch any of it, but

Also: woah, I remember them being around 4 hours. They were aired as a six-hour series, and actual runtime puts them close to a four and a half hour runtime (265 and 266 minutes). Directors Cut for Dune was 5 minutes shy of a five hour runtime at 295 minutes. I felt they did a great job, especially looking back at the production and budget. Hollywood quality? Hell no... cheap B movie quality perhaps.

Lynch wasn't even the first person that made an attempt at the film.

Quite true.

The very fact that they completed the 84 version was a goal many thought would never be reached. After the first viewing I saw people stood up and applauded. Never saw that for a film before.

The Guild Navigator in his environment chamber was a pretty breath taking effect. I can still hear the soundtrack.

I know nothing of Dune and never read the books or watched the movies. I dunno why, maybe I'll get around to the book some day because I do enjoy sci-fi and love reading.

But I think Villeneuve did a good job with Arrival, I liked that movie, so I'm interested in this new movie. I suppose I should read the book(s) before watching the movie, at least I'd personally understand more if I did.

You should read the first trilogy.
