hmmm hotel rwanda seems like it shouldn't be on it statistically. The confidence interval seems skewed. Flat line rating, maybe they should say add a rank for number of votes, since 15,000 is small compared to the others. 5,000 poor ratings would take it off the chart. Maybe I'm just being anal though.

I've seen 37!

Some I don't think should be in the top 500, let alone 50.

One of the things that I think is odd is that they have Star Wars rated over Empire. Empire is a much better movie in almost every way than SW was.

Seven Samurai is the best movie of all time... the biggest complaint these days is that it's
too long, and boring in parts. Growing up watching the Mtv edit has effected our children's
attention span. If you're a movie buff, you owe it to yourself to experience this masterpiece.

I agree. I can't really think of any movie better than Seven Samurai.

The "rating" is based on a combination of the actual rating and the number of votes it gets, so movies with a large number of votes are weighted higher:

weighted rank (WR) = (v ÷ (v+m)) × R + (m ÷ (v+m)) × C where:
R = average for the movie (mean) = (Rating)
v = number of votes for the movie = (votes)
m = minimum votes required to be listed in the Top 250 (currently 1300)
C = the mean vote across the whole report (currently 6.8)

Furthermore, they have some method to combat the fanboys who go in and give a movie a 10 or a 1 that it doesn't deserve. They don't reveal how they do that so that people can't manipulate the system.

It's not a good indicator of what movies the general public like, but it is a good indicator of what movies the people who bother to vote on imdb like. Those people are probably a mixture of movie buffs and nerds.

Everyone one of the movies on that list is a darn good movie though, they just might not really be the top 50 movies of all time. But how do you define the top 50 movies? On what criteria? Any list you come up with will be influenced by some bias.
