"...Imation will be the first U.S. manufacturer of storage products that use technology from DataPlay, which has figured out how to cram as much as 500MB of data onto a disc the size of a matchbook. DataPlay and Imation, the maker of a variety of data storage products, are making the announcement on Tuesday.

DataPlay unveiled its newest optical technology at the Consumer Electronics show earlier this year. The company is promoting the tiny, write-once disks as an alternative to flash memory cards widely used in portable devices--and especially suited to storing digital music. The durable disks are expected to cost between $5 and $12 when the devices and media start shipping in the fourth quarter of this year. Players and recorders are expected to sell for $199 to $299, says Dave Davies, DataPlay's chief technical officer..."

better then flash! oh sure you can argue that they have moving parts, and are capable of skipping, but I don't think they'll be as bad as CDs for skipping, more like MiniDisks (more durable too).

In other words, they're sweet.. I gotta wonder if NFS4 will buy any if a plugin module for his ipaQ comes out?

oh wait, he has some sort of wireless broadband connection (damn you NFS4!)...

How can something with moving parts be less complicated than a FlashRAM module? The latter uses less energy I'd think, plus its reuseable unlike that little disk.

less complicated

who said anything about complicated?

I'm saying its alot easier to transport data with this (MP3s for example) for use on those PDA's and other portable devices.

These things are hella cheap compared to your memory cards.
