imap vs pop

Which one of these protocals are better. Basically do you recieve more benefits from say setting up an email server to use imap such as exchange. Than you would pop3 I have heard imap was better but I really don't know anyone that uses it.

Very cool article! I prefer IMAP myself... My main reason is at home I connect to my local IMAP server using Sylpheed. When away from home I use my webmail to look at my E-mail... I don't want to use POP because my machine would download the mail and thus not be available through webmail. I don't like the 'leave messages on server' option because I find it can be a pain sometimes...

IMAP is much nicer - it supports header-only downloads, multiple folders, and leaving the mail on the server works much better. I'm not sure what OS you are using but the UW IMAP server works nicely on Linux and also has POP3 support if you need it.
