Imaging question(s)

I have ~ 100 machines that at some point may or may not need reimaging if I cannot quickly get it running. We have a COA on each machine so I assume my company didn't get volume licensing. The machine I made the image from (I assume since it had a COA that it is not a volume license) is a single license.

If I restore my image on multiple machines (even though each has a valid COA) is that wrong? If so, is it going to be possible to reimage these machines? If not, what are my options?

Also, how do I get Ghost off of my actual image? I had to install it to make the image.

There is nothing wrong in principle with what you're doing. But, I bet it violates the EULA. I know there is a way to make a COA non-specific image as Dell used to do this - I bought a PC a while back where I booted and had to manually input the COA key - then the PC booted and worked based upon that (and my username and other personal data).

As far as Ghost, I haven't installed it in years. I installed it long ago and only use the boot disks. You can have boot floppies with an image on a CD or DVD and restore it that way. You can also make a simple autoexec.bat and config.sys to autmatically boot the ghost executable on your image media and restore it (ala a restore CD).

It's possible to go in and change the key back to the 'right' one after you load the image. As long as you have a valid license for each system, what you are doing should be OK.

I believe you can also image an installation and then 'wipe' it so that it does what the poster above described (you need to reenter the key after you boot up). I don't know all the details about this, though.

You can also make customized Windows installation disks that will install various applications, drivers, etc. by default. This is frequently used to make installation disks that already have all the up-to-date security patches. Search for 'slipstream' for much more info.

Also, how do I get Ghost off of my actual image? I had to install it to make the image.

Don't install it to begin with? You can make an image from the bootable Ghost CD even if Ghost isn't installed on the system.

I can't find where you do this. I have tried booting up with the cd as well as browsing the cd.
