I still remember Apple making fun of Dell for having a big tablet. Now that they have had big tablets, big tablets are cool.

you havent seen people taking photos with tablets on selfie sticks? what city are you in or have been to?
Minneapolis. Why, you suddenly want to move here?

I mostly don't "get it" because the things are unwieldy, and the cameras are usually much less awesome that even the ones built into the iPhones. Let along a "real" camera.

But I guess people are stupid.

Apple is a revolutionary company with innovative ideas. I heard Apple's new design of Mac Pro will shock the world and redefine the laptop industry. The new Mac Pro will have a display that turns 360 degrees allowing you to use the laptop as a tablet.

Who would buy an iPad to use primarily, or even secondarily, as a camera?

I have a few family members who do. Don't ask me why as I don't, but I know some that do for whatever their reasons are.

now holding something bigger than the average bathroom scale up to take a selfie like the second picture in the OP is just to silly even to be a joke.

That form factor is so useless for taking objective photos that I really don't understand why they included a camera for that purpose. All that unit needed was the user-facing camera for video chats, imo. But utility and function aside they would probably have gotten slammed if they left it off.

If it turns 360 degrees wouldn't it just be a laptop again?

If you could turn it 360 degrees, it would have to pass through itself.

If Apple invents space-folding technology like that, the potential applications are limitless.

I don't think I've taken a single picture with my normal sized ipad. Not what I bought it for.

Is there a point to this thread? Are we really bashing ipads for including a camera as a "just in case" measure? I do like laughing at the idiots who pack them around seemingly as their primary point and shoot device though. I wonder if they know that their phone probably has a much better camera in it.

I've used the camera with the eBay app on my iPad when listing items.

I had to use it once to show video of the Cycloramic app causing my iPhone 5 to spin itself around. The few times I've used it, the giant viewfinder of the iPad just feels right. It worked well enough. I definitely wouldn't reach for that instead of my phone.

Some kiosk scenarios can use a camera for entering members into a system and making photo IDs. Also coupons / discounts / membership rewards systems with QR codes. I really think Apple should keep making a basic non-retina device like iPad 2 specifically for kiosk / point-of-sale purposes. They could have kept selling the iPad 2 until 2020 or longer...

A location manager came to my house to scout out the place for a possible TV show shoot. He took pictures of the place with his iPad.

I asked him why he didn't just use a camera and he said it's easier to get a good feel of the space looking at a 10" screen. Think of it is as a camera with a built-in 10" screen. And anyway, he views photos and videos on it already, so if he already has a camera on the iPad, why bother carrying a second camera?

If anything I find it more odd that people buy $1000 dSLRs only to ever shoot with a cheap zoom lens on auto.

tl;dr

Professional film crew members sometimes shoot pictures on an iPad, so regular consumers shouldn't really be embarrassed to do so.

A couple hours ago a production company (Stalwart Films) was just at the Goodwill Thrift Store near me getting "set dec" (AKA "set decoration" AKA furniture/props) for The Walking Dead. I can see an iPad Pro's huge screen being really useful for visualizing where a particular piece of furniture would fit in a set. I was tempted to donate something just to see if it would end up on TV. :)

I think using an iPad/iPhone for a viewfinder would be awesome, however the camera hardware doesn't produce images I'm usually happy with. It'd be great to shoot a video using the iPad as the display linked to a better DSLR camera capturing the image. Bonus if I can tap to focus, etc. I've already edited a couple short videos on my phone with good results, the touch interface with drag/drop was really intuitive.

The DxO One camera is pretty interesting - though I'll hold off to see if they come up with a APS sensor version. I have a Fuji X100T, so fixed lens isn't a problem for me.

It is obnoxious to use an iPad to take images which block the view of others though (parade, fireworks, concert, etc), especially if its a video.
