(10/04/05) MINEOLA - Police say two men drag racing in Westbury caused an accident that claimed the life of an elderly woman Monday night.

Herbert Singleton, 78, of Westbury, was returning from a funeral with his wife, Vinette, 75, and two relatives when his vehicle was struck on Brush Hollow Road. Police say Merqui Avila, 22, of Westbury, was racing Carlos Molina, 23, of New Cassel. As Singleton was trying to make a left turn, Avila slammed into the passenger side of his car. All occupants of Singleton?s car were taken to the hospital where Vinette died a short time later.

Avila and Molina were charged with 2nd-degree manslaughter, however, the charges may be upgraded and more charges may be added on.

I can't imagine how he feels, someone you have known for so long, and loved for so long, suddenly gone.

I'm so sad at this. This example, and examples like it that are all too common, I dispise with a deathly passion street racing. There is absolutely no justification for street racing and the patrons who participate deserve the harshest of penalties. Infact, I'd go so far as to say that anyone caught street racing be charged with attempted murder.
