That's fine. We'll just have public defenders and prosecutors.

And when a business fails to honor a contract with you? Or when someone runs into your car? What then?

Criminal trials award no money to victims and can't order the other side to perform or pay damages for breaching a contract.

You'd need civil lawyers too.

Lawyers are awesome. OP should be banned for proposing such a horrible idea.

No...we should line ALL the lawyers up and start executing them. Start with killing every third one. one, two, BANG! one, two, BANG!

If that doesn't straighten them up and make them more honest and ethical...we can increase it to every other one.

Of course, this will only really work in the imaginary world where everyone plays by "fair" rules...

As with many things, there are good and bad. I'd prefer they just ban frivolous law suits.

I'm sure if we rework the system, we can have a branch of public defenders/prosecutors to deal with civil cases, all in the same system.

And to those that think we'd be similar to China or Saudi Arabia, don't be absurd. Our laws will be upheld and fought on both sides, hence prosecutor and defender, to the letter of the law. Lack of lawyers does not equate abolishing democracy. You silly heads.

What's next? You're gonna tell me that I hate freedom because I suggested we get rid of lawyers?

What if there were no lawyers, no trademarks, no copyright, no patents and no money driven political decisions (whether as a country or as a company). Just sit and think for a moment, how much more awesome this world would be. Not to mention we would be so much further with technology.

Wrong! That's what happening right now. Those with the deepest pockets, win.

I my dream, both you and the business will be assigned defender and prosecutor, and let the law duke it out. Not in the interest of money, but in the interest of justice.

Why exactly is it that we hate lawyers again? Is it because they can write binding documents in a language that no one can understand?

Uh huh. Just try to navigate the CJ system without one. Good luck. Of course, the smart thing to do is not get sucked into it in the first place, but once in, they system pretty much doesn't give a shit about you. Without help, you are at their mercy (which is spread very thin).

Everyone would be farmers. Congratulations, you just killed economic incentive. There would be no technology. Would I work 80 hours a week if it was essentially for free? Not a chance. Even if I wanted to, I wouldn't be able to feed myself.

We absolutely should! that would do a lot to help the little guys to fight back against the big guys every time they get stepped on!

Should we socialize tax accountants then, so the little guy has the same access to tax "expertise" as the big guys? Or how about mechanics, so the little guy who knows nothing about cars can't get ripped off? Or how about....pick your specialty. Going down a slippery slope there.

LOL, that is plain silly. You actually think that we would have greater technology gains without protection of technology inventions? You wouldn't get out of the starting gate if you didn't have protections. Who's going to want to invent and market something if someone came along and used the technology for something bigger and better, essentially shutting the inventor out?

If you assume that everyone works for his or her own pride instead of money then RedS makes sense: that is eliminate money and make greed and lazyness as culturally detestable as pedophilia and racism.

It will probably thrill you to know, then, that lawyers only get paid well if they are exceptional: otherwise they tend to be out of the profession of law very quickly. Many people have 120k in student loan debt and a no-name law-degree (which is all but 5% of them) and didn't graduate in the top 5% of their class and are getting paid 50k a year to be ADA in some backwater burg.

You could make that as a teacher and not be 120k in debt and get summers off.

As long as you are not a complete fuck up with a degree from a decent school, you should be making near 6 figs by the 5 year mark even at a small firm in metro areas.

What I don't understand is why lawyers are considered an 'elite' group of professionals who are entitled to charging their customers hundreds dollars per hour. Their guild has perfected this to an anal detail - each minute costs you money.

The education aspect is not an issue - 4 years of law school do not equate, for example, to the medical school one has to undertake. I am talking about fair payment for the amount of knowledge and money invested.

The next time you want to sue someone or get sued by someone, represent yourself. When the opposing attorney beats your ass up and down the Courthouse hallway, you will then appreciate the value of their services.

All lawsuits are frivolous until it's your kid that gets hit by the drunk driver, or it's your heart defibrillator that goes off while you're conscious and delivers a shock so severe you're knocked down a flight of stairs.

All lawyers are bad until your invention gets stolen by Apple and you can't do shit about it.

You think a corporation would ever concede a single right to sue you/another corporation for any reason? And yet they advocate strongly for tort reform - and have been winning, of late.
