Image 'Tearing'?

Can someone explain to me what it looks like when your image on your monitor is 'tearing'? they say it happens at low refresh rates while playing games but i have played games on 60Hz all my life with no problem, but what does tearing look like?

60hz is not good for your eyes, but generally tearing can be a weird rip in the middle of the screen that looks different of some sort of flicker.

There was a post somewhere else about this that showed pictures. You get tearing when vsync is turned off and your video card is rendering frames at a different speed than the monitor is displaying.

So basically you have the top half of the screen showing one frame and the other half showing a different frame.

But if you've never noticed tearing, I wouldn't worry about it 🙂 Or most likely you have vsync on all the time (It's default is 'on' in most drivers/games)

i never have vsync on but will it be different with higher end games? right now i only play lower end games(not as hardware demanding) and i get nothing like that but if i play like BF2 will i notice tearing with 60hz refresh rate?

Maybe. Normally you'll notice tearing more often in FPS games. But it doesn't really matter how demanding the game is. If you're like me (I hate tearing and need vsync on all the time), you'll be able to notice it with any FPS game (quake1-2 for example).

And be sure if you have vsync on or off. If you've got a nvidia card, go to it's settings in the control panel and check the "performance & quality settings". Take the check out of "application controlled" and turn it either on or off and see if you notice a difference.

To see a difference in tearing, play a first person game, then make your character spin around in circles 🙂

tearing is when you are walking smoothly and you see the bottom half or top of the screen jerk suddenly to a new frame before the rest of the frame can. I find it very annoying and always have vsync with 60hz (lcd of course).

I'd say it looks like a "ripple". Kinda when you look through those old hand-made glass panes at a moving object
