Image Retention on Samsung PLS Panels

I bought 2 Samsung S27A850D (1440p/60hz/PLS) Monitors, the first in 2012 and the second about 6 months ago. They are used on 2 different PCs in the house.

The first started to show extreme ghosting/retention after about 8 months of daily usage, for example leaving the outlines of recently closed windows visible on the Desktop for about 15-20 minutes before they slowly fade out. This was much more visible on dark backgrounds.

I sent the Monitor to Samsung for RMA and they replaced the Panel, it worked fine again for another 5 months before it started again.

Yesterday the second Monitor started doing the same and I filed a new RMA request. Once I got a replacement I will probably sell both Monitors and buy something better even though the S27A850 is already a rather expensive Monitor (€600 in Germany).

Any thoughts on this? I read that serveral Apple IPS Panels suffer off retention but didn't know it happens on Samsung's PLS Panels. From what I know Samsung is manufacturing their own Panels but everything else on the market is made by LG Electronics.

I need a monitor where I can leave a window open for longer than 20 minutes without getting theses problems, maybe the Samsung Panels suffer off some kind of degradation?

Best regards

I had a Samsung laptop with a PLS screen that had image retention right out of the box... So I returned it.

Typical Chinese made garbage (no they aren't made in Korea)

How very odd. We have something like 8 of those (S27A850D) at work, none of which show anything like the symptoms you're describing. They're used pretty much all day for about 8 hours, no problems with image retention at all.

Perhaps Samsung had a bad PLS panel batch...?

Could be. Both of mine were bought in Germany and i'm not sure if theres a newer revision of this model. What also always annoyed me a bit with the S28A850D is the backlight bleeding I got on both screens.

I'm probably going to buy the NEC PA272W-BK, a bit more expensive but excellent reviews.
