Image Problem: What is this?

I think this was somehow caused from watching TV in the 4:3 ratio over long periods of time seeing as there is a very thin, faint line running down the screen where the picture and black sidebars would meet in the 4:3 mode. But the "darkness" around those lines is puzzaling. And this "darkness" doesn't show up when white is displayed, just colors, green seems to be the worst.

Not the best picture but hopefully it's good enough. The lines aren't really visible in this picture, just the "darkness".

Any idea?

What kind of TV is this?

If this is caused by watching a lot of 4:3 material, it might go away eventually depending on the kind of TV you have. LCDs should eventually recover from these kind of problems iirc while you may be out of luck if it's Plasma.

other way around soundman..............plasma will recover and lcd will not.

on an lcd it is BURN IN, permanent. On a plasma, while burn in is possible, there is also image retention. image retention is not permanent and is just the rest of the pixels that are not "retained" to catch up in aging compared to the rest.

ALL in all, you should be fine.

I honestly haven't looked at this issue in a while but I did think it was the way I originally stated.

I just looked it up quickly to see if it was clear that I was wrong and this was the first google result I got

http://www.practical-home-thea...m/plasma-vs-lcd-2.html

Seems to confirm what I was saying, but maybe it's not reliable

LCD - Image retention that should be reversible
Plasma - May or may not be reversible depending on permanent or temporary burn-in

That does look like burn in. From the shape of the line on the left this looks like a RPTV. Knowing the model of the TV would help.

Throw up some totally red screens and then blue and then green. That should give you a better idea. When watching 4x3 content what color are the side bars?

Duh! damn forgot, it's an LCD TV Samsung LN-S2738D. I'm not new to the forums btw I just had to re-register cause my account vanished! *shrug*

LN-S2738D LCD

I did display all green, blue, and red screens of different shades, basically the "darkness" is easily visible on all colors with darker shades, brighter shades of color it's more difficult to spot.

When displaying black and white it's not visible.

Side colors are black when in 4x3 mode.

There are some programs / test patterns out there that are supposed to help reverse these kind of problems on LCDs. I've never used one so I don't know if it would help you in this case, but it might be worth a shot.

HP has one called "LCD First Aid"

LCDs do not have burn-in AT ALL!!!
They can have image retention which will go away by just turning the TV off or placing a white background on it.
Image retention can happen with Plasmas as well, although image retention when a plasma is new is more like sticky image blur.
Plasmas can burn-in but there are many "screen saver" features on my TV, one is an orbiter mode which moves the whole screen around a little bit every 2 minutes, there is also a reverse image mode which every 30 minutes reverses the image colors and then there is white wash mode which will remove most IR or small amounts of burn-in.
