Image Distortion going from DVI-I to VGA

So I dusted off a Viewsonic P225fb monitor that I had lying around and plugged it into my laptop. The image quality looked fantastic (the laptop had a VGA out).

I'm now using it with my desktop, which has a GTX 470. The outputs are only DVI-I and mini HDMI, so I had to use a standard DVI-VGA adapter. I noticed that the screen has distortion that it didn't have when connected to the laptop. The distortion specifically is that it looks like the image is repeating itself with a more faded version of the repeat prior. Its like its harmonic distortion with a video signal.

Is there anyway to fix the distortion issue, without swapping video cards?

I've got no idea if connectors have different standards - I know HDMI (eg. ver 1.3a, 1.4a 1.4b etc) does, but I assumed that vga and dvi are universal.

If it helps, the specs for the adapter say it has 1x DVI-I and 1x VGA, and the specs for the card say that it has Dual Link DVI-I x2 and one mini DVI with HDCP protection.

Hopefully you're right. I haven't tried a different vga cable because the same vga cable produced a cleaner image from my laptop.

I suppose that trying a different vga cable will eliminate variables, and its possible that my video card doesn't like the vga cable or something.

-edit- I just need to find a vga cable from somewhere around here. .
