iMAC HELP!!!

I have a 350mhz G3 (one of those computers/monitors in one). Anyway I can't get my modem to work. It says that the port is either open or that I have insufficient memory. Yesterday there was nothing wrong and today after 10 reboots I still get this error.

If you have nothing helpful to add, then don't bother.

Geez the number of people in the world who put down things that they don't have experience with (or equal experience with) is just farking amazing. Come back when you've used a Mac for the same amount of time and same tasks as you use your Windows box for.

1) Did you install any software?
2) Did you encounter any errors before a during shutdown yesterday?
3) Did you modify any system settings yesterday?
4) Have you check the phone jack with a phone?
5) Have you replaced the phone cable?
6) Have you tried a standard terminal program (like zTerm or something)? (Assuming your attempting a PPP Dialup connection)

I've had these problems before. Try going through your extensions manager and looking for extensions and control panels which are related to the modem, but you do not use, and turn them off.

This is the mystery...Nothing was changed :frown:

Its weird, when I go to Apple System Profiler, it shows that there is no modem yet I can go to modem in the control panel and move things. Is it possible my internal modem just died? Thanks for the help.
 
OK. I can help you.

Here is what you need to do to fix the problem:

1. Shut down the computer and start it up again.
2. Close any auto-loaded applications that may be using the modem.
3. Swing the computer by the handle, like you would a bowling ball, and throw the nasty piece of translucency out of the window!

How does the imac handle modems? Can you try another one? You're sure there wasn't a power spike in the lines that may have killed it?

Sorry I cant help, Im new to the Mac scene and was hoping there would be a solution.
 
I have been forced to run a mac network and use macs all the time...THEY SUCK! WHY DID YOU BET A MAC??? SERVES YOU RIGHT! YA KNOW THERE ARE ONLY 44 REGISTERED ANANTECH USERS WITH MACS?? THE NUMBER IS SOO SMALL FOR A REASON!
 
wow never knew there was so much tension between macs and pcs. 🙂 Anyway...I guess I could try another modem....probably need to get an external one then. I just feel so lost with a Mac.

PC users are unwilling to let go of legacy hardware and move to a different platform? PC users would be lost without uncle bill? 🙂

Is there some particular reason your YELLING when you can even type?

Just because you were forced to do something that you have no interest in doesn't mean you know anything about it. In fact if you did know anything about Macs you know they're easier to maintain and network then Windows boxes are.

He probably got a Mac:
1) Because he likes the technology.
2) He grew up with them.
3) He does graphic design/animation/video editing and the Mac is better at it.
4) He's forced to use it for work/school.

1-Guy with the problem - Did you connect a graphic tablet recently ??
2-Check all your conections.
3-Under control panels...go to modem............see which port is selected ...modem or printer port???

websurfer, have you tried asking at forums.macnn.com or at macfixit.com? They are both excellent resources. You won't get the platform bigotry there either.

It is possible that the modem crapped out on you. I haven't worked with a modem in a Mac for a few years now, so I can't give you any tips.
