I'm tired of getting my butt kicked - I need a guide for debating on ATOT

Do not use reason when formulating arguments.

And don't pay attention to what anyone else says, regardless of how correct they are.

The only way to win is to grow a thicker skin. Well, that and realize some people are asshats and will never change their views, no matter how wrong you can prove they are.

Post fact. After reading OT for over three years now I can tell you 95% of the responses to the facts that you post will be flames, unrelated to the topic, or just false information. Post what you know to be true, the other guy can accept ir or reject it. Good luck on changing anyones mind on this forum though, and 95% of the time if a person is wrong they will not admit it, even if they know they are wrong.

There are no debates here just arguments.

Arguing on forums is stupid. Usually what I see is that one person will start calling names and then the debate just turns into a debate about calling names. Worst yet, some people find previous threads, just to embarass that person.

1. If you don't agree with yourself initially, you are f*cked.
2. Basically you can think of debating as writing an essay.
3. You need to have a thesis.
4. You need supporting arguments.
5. Then you summarize and restate your thesis.
6. The trick is to over analyze to the point where you anticipate the oppositions views and come up with your own
7. The last is the trickest part.
8. If you want to tick them off, you need to elevate their emotions. (ie call them ignorant, racist, you don't debate with people who are intellectually challenged.)

9. Good Luck, Have Fun, No Hacking!!

Edit: Also One Final Caveat.

That's not good advice, that is name calling.

Actually those aren't name calling, you are merely stating your opinion in the matter to elevate their emotions. Remember emotions tend to cloud the issues. And so if the other person is angry, they will have a higher chance of making mistakes... then you GOT THEM!!

What's next, people asking for guides on how to speak?

I don't see what is the big deal... this sort of thing happened since the beginning of man. Generations pass on knowledge to the next generation.... etc.

A good "critical thinking" / "informal logic" book would help you to spot common (il)logical mistakes people make in OT debates while avoiding them yourself.

For example a favorite OT way to "support" a point of view is the Ad Hominem attack, in which you "dscredit" an opposing viewpoint by an attack on the person rather than their claims. If Joe is a slack-jawed yokel then his claim that nvidia is not doing trilnear filtering in UT2K3 must be false, right?

Unfortunately if you're the only one making a fallacy-free argument in a debate that doesn't mean you'll always "win" or convince anyone, just that they won't be able to tear apart your argument.

I am tooooooooootally guilty of doing this. I've done it only in situations where the poster portrayed himself as a moral-high-ground-taker, but I found it necessary to let him know that if he was criticizing me for my actions, his slate had better be clean of similar actions on his part.

Nonsense.

The only reason you are saying this is because you are an idiot. 😛

You're a "mechanic", yet you never come into the YACT threads.. why is this?

LOL, I've done this one time. But he deserved it.

Usually everything is said in the first few posts and after that it's all repetitive. Just quote what someone else said who agreed with you and you'll be fine.

Anti-God people will always win, because they are so much more smarter and intellectual.
more smarter, eh?

That's another thing to remember, attack your opponent's spelling and/or grammar to win your argument.😉

Another good rule of thumb is to avoid replying in threads where you really aren't familiar with the subject of discussion. You thereby avoid talking out of your ass, won't be accused of talking out of your ass, and avoid making a fool of yourself, but that doesn't stop most people anyway.😛
