Why do I have to deal with Winamp, Arctic Silver, who knows what else, going from 3 to 5 just because some backward Asians are afraid of "4"?????? They could use some "death" to counteract the rate they pump out babies over there.

Chinese word for 4 = si

Chinese word for death = si

They are different characters, and until now (3.5 years of Chinese) I have never really thought of a connection.

EDIT: Crap - there's a 4 in my post.

4 means death to the Asian culture. Many would avoid having that number to do with them. Even the buildings would not have a 4th floor in some cases. :D

Why the hell would they name a number after death? Just change one of the words.

13 being bad luck is annoying too, but it's a higher number than 4. I mean.. 4! It's a single digit number. Jesus! Cars have 4 wheels!

Can North American's get cheaper rates if they stay on the 4 (called 5) floor? ;)

Now I picture Death walking around with the sickle and a pull over jersey that says on the back,

DEATH
4

not that simple, right? When every word in your language is two syllables (occasionally 3 or 4) you have to repeat them.

The two characters have absolutely no resemblence, but they just happen to be pronounced the same.

There was no naming after death going on.

"Die" and "4" in mandarin are two completely different words, and sorta pronounced differently too. (si(3) for "die" and si(4) for "4").

Like many other grandma's stories, it's just another superstition.

Money talks. If you were running a software business, would you want to lose half of your customers because you decided to get culturally insensitive? China, Japan, and the rest of East Asia represent a HUGE market that everybody wants to milk.

PS. The apartment building I lived in previously had no room numbers ending in 4. That was a privately owned building, though. I believe goverment-owned apartment buildings do not skip numbers.

PPS. My wife and I got married on a "Buddhist bad luck (butsumetsu)" day, and we had no problems reserving a usually overbooked hotel dining hall. Yay! :)

I thought it was because they didn't believe in foreplay. At least that was Leisure Suit Larry's excuse. :D

It's very simple. Either change the sound of one of the words, or stop freaking out everytime you see a 4.

Really? I thought China had a one child policy and Japan has a very low population growth. If at all, I'd figure US being so high with teen pregnancies the US has a higher rate. Oh well.

I also wish people would stop crying about skipping the 13th floor, shaking hands as a greeting (can you say germs), and other stupid traditions.
