i'm thinking of majoring in architecture....

so i'm thinking of dropping the engineering thing to become an architect

Where exactly are you in life right now? That should have a determinent upon a responsible piece of advice by any of us. First semester engineering go for it. About to write finals, NO finish it!

USC has a 5 year hardcore undergrad Architecture program.
Insanely difficult curriculum with a rather startling attrition rate, but you get to travel abroad with others in your class and those who stick it through say it's very rewarding.

Architecture at my school was one of the absolute hardest schools to get into. By hardest I guess they were one of the most selective.
I worked with a guy through college that was trying to get into the architecture school. His grades were ok, but his portfolio or whatever it is he had to submit was pretty awesome.

It took 3 years for him to get in, but he finaly did.

berkeley has a good architecture program, my sister did it and then went into advertising.

I tell ya, i wanted to be an architect since i was like 12. I loved Legos, designing things and such. I know, Legos alot different than architecture. I took some arcitecture classes in highschool, we got to design our own night clubs, houses, and office buildings. Draw up the plans, make dimensions, etc. My heart was set on an architecture major. Inbetween my junior and senior year at hs i went to this "camp" at Cal Poly SLO. Which, is one of the top architecture colleges in CA. It was great, i lived in the dorms on campus for a month during the summer. I had a blast, whole college experience, had to go to classes and made projects. Im sure alot easier than regular classes, but it gave you the feel. I cannot thank my parents enough for sending me to that program. Architecture is art, just a bunch of art, during that whole month i had 0 drawing plans. I am now majoring in EE, and have no plans to enter Architecture in the future.

I dunno your situation, but if you are a junior going to be a senior and are seriously considering an architecture major, lmk, i can give you a more detailed explanation.

Reminds me of that episode of Seinfeld where George is giving away a scholarship and has to interview students for it. He picks the kid who wants to be an architect. And when George introduces him to the committee, the kid changes his mind. "I decided I want to be a city planner, why stop at just one building when you can plan a whole city. And besides, I always thought of architects as drop out engineers." And George is trying to convice him to be an architect. It went something like that...

Architecture is pretty cool but a very hard major. I had several friends at RPI who were in the program and they often worked insane hours on their projects. I hope you like building things out of foam board because you'll do a TON of it. I believe you need to have a portfolio of work as part of the application process.

I used to enjoy doing that stuff too. Then I started to have to do it to make a living, now it sucks.

You don't know architecture unless you've come to Cooper Union in NYC - just had to get that in for Cooper architects. Either way, architecture in general has been fighting a losing battle against civil engineering. Achitecture has fallen to the "art" core and is more "how it looks" than its structural function. Unfortunately, most architects have moved on only to become interior designers. It's extremely difficult to break into the architectural firms that actually design such structures as the new WTC (also done by a Cooper Union graduate btw) unless you have a lot of talent and ambition.

i had a number of friends in the archie program at rpi too and they often had to pull all-nighters before reviews. i remember stopping by sometimes at 3am and the studios would be packed with people working.
