<< Ever try to do a burn session and then something else on a one cpu system, it just doesn't work too well. >>

Well let's see...right now I have 7 IE6s open one of which I'm using to reply to this thread, 2 Agent newsreaders doing some classified downloading business, Money 2K, 2 windows explorers and an Adobe acrobat...

Oh yeah to get to your point I'm burning a 675 meg CD using CDRwin all on my single 500 Mhz P3...sounds like you need a reload or some new hardware...

Cheers!

Try watching a quicktime or WMP, or open a game, also the number of open programs don't mean much.

Ah, I love my VP6. Dual 933MHz PIII's @ 1064MHz makes work FUN!

I have over 40 processes open right now -- incinlding CD burning, MP3 ripping, watching a DVD, and several other things and it's like I have only one program open. Programs just open up much faster for me.

The number of programs open can matter, especially if they're taking up massive CPU cycles. Oh, I forgot to mention all the while, I'm still cracking 2Mkeys p/sec in RC5. :)

CocaCola5,

You have a POS machine that is badly configured or in desperate need for cleaning house...

I have burned many cd's while I have IE open in 6 windows, downloading something, divx movie playing, autocadd 2000 open, and burning another divx movie at 8x....cd burn never drops below 98percent buffer...

I am sure I could do more, but what kind of idiot has 40 things open (I guess we see)....

This is a product of other things such as amount of ram, how you have ide devices arranged on channels, priority of use of programs, harddrive and ide performance, etc...

I have even had a divx movie being made in gknot, with ie open, autocadd open, and burning a cd...it is about how you set the priority of your programs as well...The gknot will take 100% if you give it, set priority to lower and things will work around each other

My system at time was

1.1ghz tbird @1.2ghz
Biostar kt133 mobo
maxtor ata100 controller
45gig Hdd 7200rpm ata100 (primary)
15gig Hdd 7200rpm ata100 (secondary)
BTC 8x32x dvd-rom (primary)
Aopen 12x10x32x CDRW (secondary)
384mb pc133@146 sdram

all ide drives on own channel...

my new system now

1.4ghz tbird
ECS K7S5A sis735
512mb Crucial pc2100ddr
promise ata100 controller
40gig WD 7200rpm ata100 (primary)
45gig Max 7200rpm ata100 (secondary)
Lite-on 16x48x dvd-rom (primary)
Aopen 12x10x32x CDRW (secondary)

all ide drives on own channel

most dvd playing only uses 10-15 percent cpu usage

most divx playing uses 15-20 percent cpu usage
