I guess firingsquad proved that having more memory that needed can even degrade performance....

do you have a link to that? I would be interested in reading that

i have a link from some other site that shows 2 gig of ram lags the system look for my first post above

dguy6789, dont let these people discourage you from getting your 3GB's of RAM. 5 years ago in 1998 when the 440BX motherboards first came out. I got myself a P2B board and added 3 sticks of 256MB of ram. Back then prices were high and 64-128MB was the norm and 768MB was unheard of. Same like now, where 512-1GB is norm and 3GB is unheard of. People criticized me out of sheer jealously because i had more RAM than all my friends combined. They told me 128MB was good enough, etc etc etc, dont buy 768MB you're just wasting money, blah blah blah. I paid a rediculous large sum of money for it and to this day i still dont regret one penny of it because for 5 years it is still chugging along and 768MB is still more than what people have today! Buy your 3GB of ram and enjoy every megabyte of it and let all the haters wallow in their 512MB of ram.

PC3200 1GB sticks are still a bit rare, but you can EASILY find PC2700 1GB sticks for $235 a pop. Generic ram is fine too as long as it works.

I am going to have to go ahead and disagree with that.

If he had a ton of money and was going to buy 3gb of high quality ram, I would say go for it, just for the fun of it. However the fact is, if you buy crappy RAM, you will get crappy timings with crappy performance

who wants to pay MORE to get LESS performance?

Not to mention DDR2 is getting closer...

You will not see a significant difference between 512MB and 3GB of RAM for average use, even with gaming. You don't have to take my word for it, look thru some benchmarks. There's no point in upgrading until you actually need the extra 'oomph' as it will only cost you more now, as opposed to buying later
In benchmarks, this is true, but going from 512->1024 got rid of all hitching in games like Sim City 4, UT2003, BF1942, etc.. And it also eliminated the lag after exiting said games. 3Gigs would be a waste for gaming IMO though. The upgrading game is best played by getting what you need for now, not for later, especially not 3 years down the line (directed towards the original poster). A bit of foresight is good for buying decisions, but this is like buying a 250Gig hard drive in anticipation of installing HL2 or a game far off from release.

dguy6789, what it all boils down to is that it's your money, and buying huge amounts of RAM now will not hurt anything (except your wallet might wince and if you have a wife, it'll be couch time 😀). This forum is full of some of the best advice anyone can give, and I don't believe anyone is jealous of a member getting all kinds of RAM. Some are a bit snide, maybe jealous, but you can choose to follow the consensus or go against it. Either way you will be happy IMO.

At this point, I do agree that it is just fine to blow your money on tons of ram, even if it wont help that much, however what I want to make sure is that you dont buy crappy ram. Generic Ram is usssually crappy. At least stick with a good name brand. you should be able to get 2 gb (4 x 512 ) of corsair or crucial or something for under 400$
