how about a ford flex? they are very nice looking, a little lower than an SUV, more like a wagon, ford edge is a crossover, a friend has one and loves it, or even an explorer would fit. the equinox is a nice choice too, bring the whole gang to the dealership and try it out. look at the gmc terrain also.

jeep liberty and patriot worth a look too.

Good handling, room. AWD optional. Power is good. Lambda platform has had some very good reviews. Should be no major issues for reliability. Decent fuel economy for an SUV (19 combined). Looks bad-ass.
