I'm thinking about exploring the wonderful world of tofu. Is it tasty? Anyone have some recipes?

I once had a tofu dog by mistake not realizing it was tofu. I was with a bunch of people in the university meal hall and quite unclassilly spat it out on my plate amidst a flurry of curses. Truly one of the most foul things ever in my mouth - and I've eaten at Arbys before.

In tribute to PennyArcade's "How to mod your GBA" article ...

How to prepare tofu

[*]Remove tofu from refridgerator
[*]Throw tofu in garbage can
[*]Get some real food
[*]What the hell is wrong with you?

Not tasty. No taste.
Recipe above.

:D

Tofu isn't for everyone.

Tofu curry is good if prepared correctly with a little bit of hot sauce, yum.

It's not that bad. I like it in stir-fry. Prepare as follows:

Buy some tofu. I like the firm/extra-firm kind since it doesn't fall apart.

Heat peanut oil in wok/pan (you can use other oils, but it doesn't taste as good).

Cut tofu up into pieces no thicker than 1/4 inch or so.

Fry them in the oil until the outside is fairly well browned.

Remove from oil and set aside.

Add assorted veggies to wok, sautee.

Add a bit of water, soy sauce, spices, hot sauce, rice wine, etc to wok. Stir and simmer for a few minutes.

Add tofu, a good dash of soy, stir and simmer (tofu should soak up the various flavors of the other ingredients).

Don't leave the tofu in the entire time or it will fall apart.

Yes. Both my younger sisters went on "health kicks" for awhile and convinced our parents to get tofu on a regular meal basis. Horrible, horrible stuff.

Though I suppose if you're some alfalfa-growing tree-hugging flower-power barefoot granola hippie, or a cow-humping animal-rights lunatic vegetarian Meat-Is-Murder fanatical psychopath, you just might like it. </rant>

I love fresh Japanese tofu with some soy sauce.

Mabo/po tofu is really good. You can probably find some instant mix for it at an asian grocery.

Deep fried tofu is also awesome.

Go to a Japanese restaurant and order age-dashi tofu as an appetizer. I don't know anyone who didn't like it.

It really depends on how it's prepared. It can taste like bland, gooey nothing or it can taste great. I think most americans are just conditioned to associate it with "health food" (in the worst sense) and therefore think it's disgusting. Oh well.

tofu has almost no taste. it's all in how you prepare it. stir-fried tofu is a great way to make it, with vegetables & noodles.

however, meat substitutes (soy hot dogs, patties, etc) are almost always awful, many vegetarians will tell you that too. the only exception is stuff made by morningstar, which is usually great (i every kind of meat, and i still buy morningstar stuff). bottom line, don't try to replace meat with meat substitute. use tofu as tofu, not as a fill-in for chicken.

If I'm going to eat bean paste I'm going to eat the kind called refried beans.

Get the asian kind of white tofu, leave it in the fridge, and when you're ready to eat take it out, cut it up a bit, drench it in soy sauce, and put some pork sung or some dried something (dried brine shrimp goes well too) and eat it.. not too bad.

or there's a few kinds of tofu that you can eat with nothing and they've been cooked flavored- good luck if you're not asian trying to figure out what these are. The REALLY smelly tofu at chinese restaurants isn't *that* bad, except the smell is like nasty socks, and the taste is just regular.

EDIT: cut it up into cubes, don't go savage on it and mush it up ;)

tofu's taste depends on the seasoning. it can be good when mixed in with other things that provide flavor, but i dunno about being a main component or a "meat replacement"

Stuff like "not dogs" "tofurky" "phoney balony" etc. etc. are horrible.

Straight Tofu that you cook yourself can be quite good though. I don't know any recipes but my mom cooks some really good Tofu stuff. So it is possible to be good :)

I like Arby's. The Chicken Strips + Curly Fries. Mmmmmm.

Korean Tofu Soup. Even better.
