So do you guys think I'm nuts?

I've really had it with the 8800 drivers.

My biggest issue is the broke Flat Panel Scaling. It's driving me nuts! I've got lots of games that do not support widescreen and not being able to turn off the auto scaling really sucks. I can't stand scaling a 4:3 or 5:4 res to 16:9 or 16:10. I've also got games that I don't want to run at 1920x1200.

I'm seriously considering selling my 8800 GTX on ebay and buying a 7900 GTX or X1950XTX. By the time any DirectX 10 games come out NVIDIA will probably have a faster card out and if I'm lucky they've got their drivers working properly.

So what do you guys think? Should I do it?

Also, which card should I get? I'm really not that happy with NVIDIA right now so I'm leaning towards the ATI card.
 
Auto Scaling can be fixed if you set your own custom monitor timings from the CP. I did this and it worked. Did you even look around other forums for fixes?
 
No; do not do this, it is a bad move overall. I would really, really contemplate this before doing it. And, if you really have to do it... don't get a 7900GTX. Go with the latter one.

That's the other problem I have. Wide mode (1:1) doesn't work on my 2407WFP. THis is a widely known problem.

Trading down to a 7900 GTX from an 8800GTX makes as much sense as getting penis reduction surgery.

I miss the flat panel scaling as well, but Nvidia will get the driver situation straightened out eventually.
 
I have a nice X1950XTX in a retail box that got maybe a week's use... I'll consider trading that off for your GTX. 🙂

Maybe owning an 8800GTX has given you too much penis for your own good?
 
ATI's drivers don't allow 1:1 mapping either iirc, so that's a downgrade for sure. But ya, nVidia's 8-series drivers are still pretty rough, with no immediate relief in sight now that Vista is here.

I was in a similar situation though, 8800 with no 1:1 for signals from my PC, 2407wfp A03 with no 1:1 for signals from other inputs. The 8800 is here to stay though (until maybe R600), so the other option was sending the 2407 back. Waiting on shipping labels from Dell now.

Anyway, i guess you cant go bad either way. By downgrading you will get much reduction in performance but be awarded with much more stable driver. This also opens you to sve some cash and see what the R600/G80 refresh will be.

Sounds like a good plan, but im sure nVIDIA is working hard to get most of these issues fixed.

Your choice.

 
I think scaling can be done you just have to hunt for it - it's no longer on the top menu of the CP.

Try this:

You need to set up a toggle key.
1) Enable and open nveiw Desktop manager
2) Select "hot keys" tab
3) highlight or select the "toggle LCD scaling" and click "add" tab
4) Now select your hot key... I use ctrl +F1
5)bhit ok exit and now you should be able toggle LCD scaling instantly on and off with ctrl + F1

Good luck to ya..LMK if it works.

Whoa, that works for me :Q I thought scaling was broke, but maybe going at it through nview makes the difference.

This drove me nuts when I first got my 22" widescreen. I think the fix that I discovered was to uncheck a box under Custom Timings that said "Treat as HDTV." Once I did that, the "Change Flat Panel Scaling" became available.
 
I feel the same way as you do (don't have the same problems) and I'm not really too happy with my 8800GTS. For various reasons this is my first ever nVidia experience and will probably be my last.

You can get to nview by right clicking the nV icon in the notification area (provided you didn't disable the icon).

That's a shame, as they do make good cards. I'm not an nV fanboi by ANY means, but I do think that you picked a bad time to jump in due to the DX10 cards being so new and having inevitable issues (which will hopefully all be worked out). Not that I blame you for jumping in when you did though...I mean when the 8800 benchies & reviews started coming out, I distinctly remember hearing a loud thud as our jaws collectively hit the floor. 🙂

When I right click the NVIDIA icon in my system tray it doesn't give me an option for nView. Isn't this a multi-monitor setting? I've only got one display.

It means to turn off expansion of the image. Say for example you got a game that only supports 1024x786 (4x3) but you got a 20" LCD monitor with a native resolution of 1680x1050 (16x10). You got three choices:

a) expand the image to the native resolution which is default and looks like sh1t because everything is blurry and stretched.
b) Aspect scaling where the image is expanded without changing the aspect ratio, also looks like blurry sh1t but less so because at least ratios are corect.
c) Turn expansion off (scaling, 1:1 pixel mapping, etc) which displays image perfectly sharp in the center of screen as it was meant to be displayed however it leaves you with black voids aka letterbox effect like this.

Use the nvidia classic control panel or b) start>settings>CP> nivida desktop manager
