I'm taking my 6600 GT back for an X800 XL...

1. Do you think it's smart to take back my BFG GeForce 6600 GT OC 128 mb that I paid $217 (tax included) for to get the X800 XL for $285 on newegg?

2. What is the best brand of X800 XL? This one looks like the highest rated:

Rosewill Radeon X800XL 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI-Express x16 Video Card - Retail

3. Would the X800 XL still fit with the system I'm building:
Athlon 64 3200+
1 GB ram
ASUS A8N-E mobo

4. What kind of cooling would I have to get for this card? Or is the stock cooling that comes with it OK?

1. Considering that some next generation cards are about to start coming out, I think that if you hadn't bought the 6600GT first and just went straight to the x800 Pro, that you woulnd't have to worry about next generation cards. But since you bought the 6600GT first, I recommend you sell that when the next generation cards come out and just buy one of those. That way you can save for a next gen card too.

2. Sapphire and MSI are pretty good companies. Rosewill is more of an all-around company (they make from cases to power supplies to videocards). I recommend buying from a company that sticks with videocards such as Sapphire. I have one and it's amazing and reliable.

3. If your system has an AGP8x slot then it will work, no doubts. edit: If you have an AGP8x version of the 6600GT then make sure to get an x800 Pro that is AGP8x also.

4. I for myself haven't had any problems with the stock cooling but if you are deciding on overclocking then I absolutely recommend getting an extra fan or something to help cool it out. I just leave my case open 😛. I know it looks bad but the cooling is amazing when your case is just open.

Hope this answers your questions.

Actually, I was going to get the PCI-express version of the card. But do you think the 6600 GT is a pretty good card right now? Will it play HL2, Far Cry, and Battlefield 2?

A8N-E doesn`t have an agp8x slot but the x80oxl will fit the rig just properly. As for changing the card i say wait until the next generation appears and the price for x800xl will go down and change it then.

Oh whoops I forgot to say that just make sure you get the right card for the right slot 😛. Anyways, yes the 6600GT should play HL2 and Far Cry quite nicely but for Battlefield 2 I have a feeling that you might dip to medium to high without AA and AF.
