I'm stumped. System hangs with any sound card and drivers installed

I have a Gigabite mobo and an Athlon 500 running at 750. The system has been stable for six months. . .until I moved. I didn't strap in the CPU, and sure enough when the movers delivered it the card was bouncing around inside the case (with a big hunking Artic Circle). I fugured the system was trash. . .but it works with one exception.
The computer locks up at various times, usually when sound is being played or the CD is being accessed. I reloaded EVERYTHING and discovered it is rock solid as long as no sound card is installed. I figured the new PCI sound blaster Live was the culprit, but when I installed an older ISA sound card, got the drivers loaded, it did the same.

Help please! I have no idea where to go from here. I need sound!

Does it act up when a sound card is in ANY slot? Did you try different slots, maybe if you've been using the same slot with different sound cards the problem is with the slot?

Good idea, however one card was in a PCI slot, and the other in an ISA slot. I didn't try both of the on board ISA slots, but I did put the Sound Blaster Live! in three diferent PCI slots.

I droped it off at a local computer shop for an estimate (insurance purposes). I'm interested in seeing if they price out a software problem or hardware. I'm suspecting a hardware (or firmware) problem but I really don't know where to go from here. 🙁

One thing to try is to see if the cards are at fault ..maybe sticking them in a friends computer.

If they work fine, try a reformat of the hardrive..so u KNOW no driver conflicts are happening.

I'll try them in another 'puter. I've reformatted the HD several times in the process. . .to get rid of any stray drivers as you suggested.

Thanks,

The SB live conflicts with lots of stuff. It used to bring up a BSOD every time I started windows. The first thing to try is to disable SB16 emulation. However, if the only thing which caused these problems to start happening, 1 or more cards in your system is most likely damaged, and I'd suggest trying each of them in a friend's computer.
