im stuck at 195 FSB

rig is in my sig.

i updated my bios to the latest bios because it was the the first or second revision of the board. i still couldnt get past 195. i upped the votage to 1.7, still stuck at 195. i relaxed my memory timings, still stuck at 195. i upped to voltage to the ram, still at 195. im confused why i cant get to 200... any ideas?

1. could be the limit of your CPU
2. could be the limit of your PC2700 DDR333
3. could be your revision of your MB

drop the multiplier and check if you hit 200 but that would be useless cause you dropped your multilpier?

you're already at 195, why do you need the extra 5? bragging rights?

1.i doubt its my cpu, i just got this like a month ago, so its a pretty good stepping.
2.i doubt its my ram for some reason. it does 195 fine at 2 2 2 5, so wouldnt you think it could do 200 at 3-4-4-7?
3. hmmm...it is an older one, i thought updating the bios would fix it.

any other ideas?

2 items come to mind. Board Revision and Bios Level.

Your board revision must be 1.04 or 1.06 or 2.0 to support 400FSB.

If your board is 1.04 or 1.06 you must have BIOS 1004 or higher.
If your board is 2.0 you must have BIOS C1003 or higher.

It should be printed somewhere on the motherboard.

Does it have the A1/C1 chipset? Cpu-Z will tell you the rev. under the mainboard tab if you're not certain. If it's the A3 then 200fsb may require more vdd voltage, that board doesn't offer access to the vdd in the bios though does it?

I had a 2500 that stuck at 185 when I tried to overclock, however I had JUST replaced from the same system a TbredA 1800+ that was running 217*8.5...

So I went balls-out and carefully used an exacto knife to cut the L12, which forces the chip into a 266FSB default chip, rather than 333. No one can explain why it works (some, including myself, believe that maybe the chipset makes certain hidden timing optimizations between 266 and 333 chips, hence switching the FSB default changes the blind timings), but it has definitely yielded success for MANY people!

check below the 2nd PCI slot of the mobo,
it should print ASUS A7N8X

there is the Rev in smaller fonts on the right hand side of it

you are almost certain of getting FSB 200 if its REV 2.00

then maybe you should consider getting PC3200?

last time I had the same board with rev 1.04 and I only managed a 185FSB ;(
have you updated to the latest bios? it might help

i just updated....it didnt help any

so is the general consensus that my board is whats holding me back?

Board or RAM.
DDR 400 could be your issue also.

somehow I think its the board more than the ram.
ram with relax latencies should be able to acheive FSB 200

did you up the Vdimm? to 2.7 or 2.8?

with the 1.04 boards even with a bios update there is not luck of getting 200 fsb unless it already did . It requires more voltage to the north bridge. it is definatly your motherboard. there is an EASY pencil mod for these boards though. for more info about it go to NforcersHQ they are awsome there. just go to the asus forum and search for the pencil mod and you will find it.

Look for a Revision 2.0... I was lucky enough to get one of the first ones back in Feb. and I can run the FSB at 233 Mhz... if only I could afford 1 GB of RAM that would run in sync at that speed =)

I think whoever wrote that article seems to be full of you know what.

The A7N8X Deluxe has ALWAYS had a PCI/AGP lock... so the "stuff" about his sound, and then hard drive crapping out sounds like pure BS.

As far as needing water cooling, or voltage mods... maybe I just got lucky, but I haven't made ANY hard modifications, the only changes I've made are to the FSB.

I doubt your motherboard can do more fsb

i've tryed 3 different nforce2 motherboards and none of them would get very high fsb speeds
they all get around 200 max, if that
and i've run my mem at 230 so i know it's not the memory

i've even lapped the northbridge and affixed a custom cut copper heatsink with a 5k rpm fan
this didn't give me 1 more mhz
also I have water cooling and all the voltage mods in place
