Good thing you aren't starting a spelling tutor business.

"Im starting an local computer repair service..."

should be...

"I'm starting a local computer repair service."

Terrible idea, IMO. I did it for two years and it was a huge mistake. People break $hit and you can't prove they did it, so you have warranty all kinds of stuff. They call you at all hours, including off business hours to ask the stupidest little questions and wanting help with a system I built them or wiht a computer I fixed.

You'll see soon enough...

Wut u meen he wright!

I remember thinking of setting up a place like this awhile back with a couple friends, of course it never got off the ground due to funding (although we looked back at it, and realized that the general profit margin really isn't that large.)

It gets even worse now becuase almost all the parts are getting cheaper and cheaper, if you mark components up too much people will go elsewhere.

I wouldn't touch certain family members' computers for $15 an hour, let alone complete strangers. I had a part time job at the University doing exactly what you mentioned. I think you are over-anticipating what the average computer user knows about computers. If you are fixing something on a user's computer, the chances are that the user broke it. When you walk out the door, they will make the same mistake and need your services again. This time however, they will blame the problem on you or if you are lucky the computer. Either way you will not be paid for the second, third, etc. trips to their house.

This is exactly why everyone computer savy doesn't do this. Its a huge pain in the @$$ and doesnt pay enough. Even at $40 an hour.

I know A+ doesn't mean anything to us, but to the average person it means a lot. Trust and assumption of knowledge.

I'll take the nice approach and say become some local PC shop's bitch at $7/hr. I actually learned more at Anandtech and buy building my own stuff, but I did learn a few very important lessons there, especially about backing up data. ;)

BTW, I estimated licenses and stuff would cost me about $600 IIRC, probably another $400 for various equipment, and a few hundred more for various software to startup. Don't forget accounting software either. Also your life will be hell without KVM's and extra monitors, or you'll be so unproductive the job won't be worth it. Consider also commute times and how they will effect your productivity and costs. I'll also point out that if you're skills are poor, and you service a business and really fvck something up, and especially if you're a sole proprietorship, you will more than likely wish you were dead.

People really need to think these "I'm starting PC repair!" endeavors through. I think if you're going to do that you should be able to recite your state's website for business start-ups by memory. No one ever stops to consider the initial costs and hassles, taxes, and liability.

I do just about everything dealing with compters, I try to stay focused on supporting businesses but have some home clients as well. the home clients use up 80% of my time.

I charge $75 and hour and the drive time really sucks I drive at least 2-3 hours per day. customers are stupid, but that's why they pay you. BTW before I incorprated I did tech stuff for a small company for 2 years then decided to jump in.

Compusa by me charges $85/hr if you bring the pc to them so I feel I'm very fair in pricing.

and you will see lots of stuff you can't imagine. Just the otherday I had a woman who wanted her 1998 laptop software from a 486 to run on her new mac OSX box.....

edit for spelling

Congrats on starting your service - you're doing exactly what most successful consultants I know started out doing. You're going to make a lot of mistakes and have some awful experiences, but that's how you learn.
