All hail Seagate! I only ever buy Seagate drives as well.

Just to add...

I have a Maxtor 80gig 7200rpm 8mb cache, and a 160 with same specs. One time, the 80gig pulled the "missing system.cfg file, need to repair etc" and when i tried to boot off cdrom, it would hang. I then tried to format at install windows onto it from a totally different computer, and this worked. Replaced the harddrive back into the old system, and after a few minutes of windows adjusting itself to the different mobo and processor etc., it was all fine and dandy. No problems ever since.

Why didn't I see this thread earlier? well it still stands for me.... still RMAing at least 1 Maxtor a month here at work... I have never seen such worthless hardware in my life... a DiamonMax 60 today, 30gig, 1 month out of warranty (typical) failed, clicked during format, stopped formatting, and then upon reboot said backup everything you've got a SMART error... hooray for trash hard drives!! last drive was another DiamondMax 8 40gig (those are the worst)

I wonder when the next one will go.

i cant speak of reliablity personally, but i can speak of noise. i switched from a maxtor to a seagate. the maxtor worked fine, but developed the whine and became very noisey when accessing. the seagate is silent. i havent heard it yet.

I have maxtor 80GB drive for around 4 years now. It's been trough 3 systems and I have no problems with it as of yet.

That said, I've never ever had a issuse with any of my Seagate Drives. I did have one issue with a older Western Digital HD.

I  Seagate. I just got a new 8MB 120GB 7200 from them and it's sweet. I used to have a Maxtor DiamondMax that would give me a click of death, and then work.. 😕

I wonder how many would post about crap WD or seagate HD's if someone started a post?
maybe i'll change my tune when MY maxtor craps out. check for an I WILL BOMB MAXTOR post in about 3 mos when my warranty is up

I used to be a big Maxtor fan, but I'm not so sure anymore. I have a flaky 80GB and a 120GB Diamond Max Plus that suffered from the "Musical Maxtor" (google it) syndrome. Now it fails SMART. I bought the 120GB at Staples less than two years ago and it has a 3 year warantee. When I enter the drive into Maxtor's online warantee thingy, it says "Please call customer service" or somesuch. It used to show up with the correct info.

I have the receipt and the original box, so I'll let you know how it turns out. They better not bone me.

Never had a problem w/ Maxtor. The only HD that died on me was an old school Conner back in the... forgot when. And an IBM GXP75. That's it. But I think one of my WDJBs in the RAID 0 is dying though. Have used WD, Quantum/Maxtor, IBM/Hitachi, Seagate, all good.

wow, all the drives I've had fail and I've never heard of Musical Maxtor... although the latest drive I threw in the garbage clicked during a format, and then failed SMART (trashed it)

an update, I got a musical Maxtor drive today!

person I sold a computer to about a year ago said the PC wasn't booting... it's a DM plus 9 80gig drive, and it was doing the musical maxtor when I opened the case 🙂

it's 1 month out of warranty just like the rest of the drives that fail, so I thew it in the garbage, and he opted to just go with another 80gig, Seagate 7200.7

It will never end with Maxtor... nothing but failures. sure does create a lot of work for me..

1 60Gb DM+9 (2 years old), 1 120Gb DM+9 (1.5 years old), 1 20Gb 7200rpm in father's PC, 1 20Gb 7200rpm in sister's PC.

Never a hitch with any of them.

I've been using maxtors for more than 8 years now and have only had 1 drive fail. I won't hesitate to buy them again.

Every brand is going to have a bum product here and there. If you've had 3 go bad at the same time.... I'd put the PSU in the trash right next to the three drives that kicked.

i fix computers on the side, mainly for extra cash and free for my friends...

at current count, id say ive dealt with 7 hard drive failures/errors/starting to die.

guess what?? they were all maxtors except one (my IBM DEATHstar which im surprised lasted 4 years).

WD Raptors for me or Seagates with 5 yr warrenties.

I did a test once. I took a seagate HD, a Samsung HD and a maxtor HD, I hooked them up to the same PC, turned them on then dropped them (intentionally) at the same time from the same height. Guess which one won? The samsung lived (and still lives in my son's pc) the maxtor died instantly and the Seagate lived about 2 hours after the fall. Apparently I was very bored at the time. 🙂

My diamondmax 9 plus just crapped out after little more than a year of light use. Coincidentally, the warranty is 1 year.
This is the 3rd maxtor to crash on me so I've had it with Maxtor. I've had almost as much trouble with Western Digital so
they're on my shitlist too. I've read nice things about seagate so I'll try them.
