heck, I get teary eyed watching my son play with the dogs some days.
Hell, I get teary eyed sometimes when playing with my own dog.. It's knowing that he's 5 years old now and won't be around forever, and he's such a great dog..
My two just turned seven and I know I'm at least, and probably past halfways, with them. My last one was almost 14.5 and even though I knew he didn't have long even before he was found to have, as the vet said, "It's really bad cancer, probably prostate, one of the worst cases I have ever seen! If it was you or me, we would be screaming for morphine, he just seems to ignore it or really doesn't feel it!", putting him to sleep was horrible, I was a mess all day.
Ten days after he diagnosis, we put him down, as he started acting weird, howling and stuff. In those last ten days though, we got him all kinds of burgers and ice cream, all the stuff he really loved to eat, and he got to see both dog and people friends before he went, too. A kid that worked at the pet store blubbered like it was his dog when I told him he was going to be gone soon. A friend of mine got all blubbery, he had lost his Boxer due to a freak illness a year before, and he swore he would never get another dog again.
We were "going to wait" and get two purebred $$$ pups 6 or more months later, but two weeks later the friend above told us his ex-girlfriend had 13 pups to find homes for and the next day, we had two of the remaining eight that were left. After a month or so, my friend cracked and he got two Boxer pups.
I never thought I would be more upset than when my last dog went, but when one of my present ones goes, it's going to be even worse. He's a "once in a lifetime" dog, and I'm going to be a total mess when he checks out. He got some kind of stomach thing a while back and was throwing up and was really miserable, and I was getting panicky about it. He's been so healthy it was a shock to see him like that. A few hours later, he was back to normal, and I was out 75 bucks in a wasted visit to the vet.
It's sad, but when you get a dog or cat, it's part of the deal..
