I got tired also, so I started running for ~1/2 hour a day on a machine... It still hasn't done anything but hey, 2 weeks never does anything, you need to do it for at least a month till you start seeing considerable results. But, your diet will change without you even knowing.. At least for me, I started seeing candy and going eww and eating better..

That is very true. After I started working out, I grimaced at McDonald's and that type of food. Just made me feel sick to my stomach to think of eating that junk! Also, the change is gradual. You won't suddenly notice that you can run 50 miles at 10 miles an hour! In fact you may not even notice a difference until you stop and look at what you're currently doing and what you did a month ago. I know that i didn't notice a difference in myself when I started working out, but then after a while I compared myself to what I was like a month or two back, and I was like ... wow, I did improve!

Seriously, my brother is a big guy (big and a little fat) and I've seen some of the things that have worked for him:

The suggestion about swimming is a good one, need some exercise and cardio work

Start weight training!

Its hard at first, but seeing yourself get stronger is really satisfying! It will raise your self esteem, and give you motivation to continue your diet. Plus, it will build muscle that will be able to burn those extra calories, and give you energy.

My bro did this is high school, and his frame allowed for phenominal growth. Went from benching 120lbs to 250lbs in a semester. The football coaches thought he was on 'roids!

This may sound a little wierd, but the vet recommended to my parents to feed our fat little dog lots of veggies, like green beans, as filler for her diet. she can eat the amount that satisfies her, but her overall calorie count is lower (plus lots of fiber and vitamins which are always good.)

Talk to someone who knows what the hell they are talking about, not all the jokers on this board, or on the street.

BTW, I think those Atkins diets are crap. While some people may be able to lose weight with them, that does not mean they are good for you. Plus consumption of Zero carbs is very difficult, besides, what is college w/o beer? Not to mention buying all that meat would be very EXPENSIVE, esp for a colledge student.

Besides, the diets of SE Asians is mostly rice, but how many really fat Chinese do you see on TV? (half-joking)
How many obese vegitarians do you know, all the ones i know tend to be really thin.

Overall, losing weight is difficult, any "Easy" diets. esp those w/o exercise are bound to fail!

<< Dieting does not work, calorie counting does not work.

<< Someone who wants to be healthy would not do this! A no carbs diet will cause you problems in the long term. you want to eat healthy and drink lots of water. >>

You have obviously never read Dr. Atkins book. Nowhere does he tell you not to eat carbs, other than the 2 week induction period in which he tells you to cut your carbs down to very low levels. The 300 grams of carbs a day that is recommended by the FDA is EXCESSIVE. Read his book thoroughly next time before you comment on it.

Low carb diets work. The trick is determining how many carbs you can eat a per day without triggering the mechanisms that cause weight gain.

correct me if I'm wrong here.....

if we're recommending excersize, shouldn't he increase the intake of carbs? ar least non sugar. in the form of grains and such?

<< You're recommending a meat and veg diet (atkins) to someone who wants to seriously lose weight? Someone who wants to be healthy would not do this! :| A no carbs diet will cause you problems in the long term. you want to eat healthy and drink lots of water. Keep a well balanced diet. >>

Have you actually read the Atkin's program? How about The Zone? They are similar in approach, but Atkins is more extreme in the beginning. I'm recommending a low-processed foods carb diet to someone who wants to lose weight. It works in 100% of the people I've ever known that used it (including myself, I lost 20+ points in 3 months with it).

I read both books and thought of what the typical "caveman" pictures looked like: none of them were obese. Why? I believe, in part, of the amount of processed foods we eat today versus a hundred years ago. Sure, the food pyramid in the US has breads, rice, grains etc as a main part of the diet, but look at the number of obese people that we have. Look at places in the world, that rely less upon a high-processed carbs diet and there a smaller number of obese people.

You don't need to completely remove these foods from the daily diet, but cutting down heavily on them will definitely yeild results.

I'll admit I have not read that crap (IMO). I rely on friends and family who are physicians to determine what is healthy and what is not. The Atkins and the Zone diet are not healthy. This is from my sister, physician at Cedars Sinai and my cousin at Mass General. Also from their colleagues they say this is definitely not a healthy diet. But do as you will. We all have our own opinions and I'll stick with my sources anyday who have seen people on these diets develop problems.

Excercise and diet go hand in hand. You do not need to eat large amounts of carbs in order to have energy. Eat lots of protein, take daily vitamin suppliments, and drink lots of water. Like I said, there is a lot of misconceptions about low carb diets. Just like the misconceptions that exist between Ketosis and Ketoacidosis -- and doctors who actually DO NOT know the difference. Processed sugars are a no-no. I mean, how can the AMA actually put its seal of approval onto frosted flakes. I guess they like to endorse rotten teeth and fat children. Atkins is a threat to the medical profession, and his approach is unconventional, and they don't like it because for the most part it works, and it is a long term solution.

Xesh,

Racquetball is a great way to get in shape. Isn't there a BB posted up near your racquetball courts for pick-up games? I just got back into rqb. this semester and I've noticed better vascularity in my arms and shoulders, little slimmer in the waist. (I'm not fat fat - most of my friends compliment me when I have my shirt off - but just a lil too much body fat to see my abs. Something like high teens/very low 20s bf % wise) If you have no one to play with, then play by yourself for an hour-hour and a half. I mean I know it might seem stupid but its good practice and usually whenever I'm done my shirt is soaked in sweat.

Lets see.

-Eliminate ALL and i mean ALL forms of sugar...don't even consume a gram of it. I'm talking about refined sugars (junk food and treats)...some natural sugar (apples, oranges, etc. is ok).
-No white flour, pastry stuff, bagels, etc....if you have to eat bread eat some whole wheat stuff....but go easy on it (this also includes rice)
-Take it easy on the pasta...if you aren't excercising enough it won't work, it's basically all carbs
-Eat a LOT of vegetables...if you have some salad, FORGET THE DRESSING! Dressing is one of the most evil foods gram for gram.
-Eat "good" meat such as chicken and fish. Yes it contains fat but most of it is no saturated, plus you get the best protein from chicken & fish. make sure it's not battered!!
-Eat 3 meals a day damnit!!!
-Don't eat after 5pm!!!
-Divide your weight in half and thats how many ounces of water you should drink a day

weight should start falling off

fat is generally not the problem. Your body will convert sugars into fat and store them. That is why low fat diets have very short term results. What people need to do is rethink the way they eat.

To add what Kami says. You can still get your sweet kick, just not using processed sugar. There are substitutes such as Stevia and Sucralose. Sucralose is generally better for cooking where heat is applied -- Equal tends to become bitter when used in cooking. I use salad dressing, but only those with no sugar added. Vegetables are good, just watch Corn. It is very high in carbs. Most people can eat 60-100 carbs a day and still maintain their weight with very little excersice. If you do decide to go on a low(er) carb diet, be sure you have no existing health problems (other than being overweight, which is a problem in itself) and also buy KetoStix. Use these to watch your Ketone levels. It is essential to monitor your Ketones and your sugar levels.

The way to lose fat while increasing cardiovascular muscles is to maintain a healty diet while exercising regularly. Here's a simple suggestion, just keep yourself busy, so you won't be eating because you're bored. On top of that, commit to an exercise that enjoy. I know it's difficult to do what I say, but you must experiment with what is best for you.

For example, I enjoy playing basketball so I would often call my friends out to play, if not play with people in the park, and if nobody's there, I'll just practice w/ myself. Also, I used to jog during the weekends to keep in shape. I also maintain a good diet, I only eat 2 or 3 meals a day. Of course, this differs from person to person.

1. NO RED MEAT!
2. NO REFINED SUGAR!
3. ...

Come on Xesh, be excited! Be, be excited!

Anyways, I don't agree with the logic of "this diet is good" or "this diet is bad." Just make smart decisions.

As for exercise, running or swimming is probably best.
