I'm sick of being a fatass....

What to do? I find that I can't really run for extended periods of time, but I can get great exercise playing such games as raquetball and tennis (though I suck at them). The problem is that noone ever wants to play them! I want to be at least vaguely in shape... can anybody out there give me advice? BTW, I'm a college student, so I can't do anything radical (like joining the army). Much appreciated....

i'd suggest swimming. it'll get you fit like not other 😀
I went swimming for 4 weeks straight and everyday. gained some weight but that was cuz all my muscles began to regain its younger state. lost a couple inches off my waist from it. don't over do it though. jsut take it easy the first coupel weeks.

If you don't know how to swim, I'd suggest some sort of water sport. Or water aerobics. I think they have something like this. But it's great excersize. You don't get too exhausted from it. And the water acts as a natural resistance to tone muscles.

<< How big of a "fatass" are you? 🙂 >>

*giggle giggle* oh man! that's jsut plain mean no matter how big the dude is! :| (sorry couldn't help but giggle)

This is such an easy question to answer. Just do ANYTHING other than sitting on your ass. You can hike, swim, run, play games, get a physically demanding job. Anything that makes you move will get you inshape. Just get off your fat ass. Sitting at the computer, watching TV, drinking, playing cards,... does you no good. Get off your ass and do something. You can do it all alone or with a friend. It doesn't matter.

Cutting down on processed foods help a lot. Try not eating the following:
soda
beer
any carbonated and sweetened drink
candy
pasta
bread
rice
potato's (or anything with them in it)

Eat more vegetables and eat less after 6pm. Try not to eat anything 3 hours before bedtime (drink water instead). Also, up the intake of water and make sure the water is ICE cold. Essentially, you are eating more meat and vegetables -- more like a caveman.

You will see results in weeks, but you have to stick with it, not just during weekdays. If you want to increase your metabolism to help this out, start going to the gym (your college proably has one) to lift weights, run, swim, etc. Try going 2-3 times a week for about an hour each time. Stick with it for 4 weeks and see the results.

If you are really that much of a "fat ass" running is probably bad for your knees. Try riding a bike.

You're recommending a meat and veg diet (atkins) to someone who wants to seriously lose weight? Someone who wants to be healthy would not do this! :| A no carbs diet will cause you problems in the long term. you want to eat healthy and drink lots of water. Keep a well balanced diet.

<< Crystal meth? *lol* crack? *lol* - j/k 🙂 >>

Had a few GFs pick up smoking to lose weight. Of course the were the ultra ultimate supreme lights. 🙂

I've been in and out of shape for the past 7 years, and i'm on my way back to in shape for the rest of my life.

I don't advocate diets as they do not cause a life-style change. However, my weight had ballooned so much (300 lbs @ 6'4'') that I needed a jump start. Since July, I've been on a high-protein diet and have lost 35 pounds. I'm now 35 pounds from my ideal weight , and not near as embarrassed to go to the gym. Like I said, I don't advocate diets, but I needed a jump-start.

THe best thing that the high protein diet did for me is take me off of Soda. Man, I was addicted to soda---like a two-liter a day it seemed. Now, I drink only distilled water. That's all. A high protein diet also makes you realize how much sugar you have in your diet too (I love candy too).

From my experience in the past, the best thing to do is just to start, and find something you can do everyday. Weigh yourself everyday. Even just walking for 30 minutes a day will help. The hardest part for me was just getting started, because I felt so damn bad about myself. but once I did get started and I lost that first 5 pounds, it was a big help.

My goal is to get a work out routine of 4 days a week, and run/bike/swim (1 of the three) 7 days a week. It's going to take time, and I know I can't live on high-protein forever. But, dammit, I wanna live past 50 (i'm 26), so I'm just going to have to keep with it.

How about cycling or mountain biking? Very easy on the joints (unlike running) and burns lots of calories (as much as 700 per hour) as you're using large muscle groups. I went from 200 to 175 in about 4 months of consistent (4-5 rides per week) cycling and trying to keep a reasonable diet.

A note: be patient with weight loss. You can't really lose more than a pound or two per week without your body also going after muscle tissue to feed itself. I use a Tanita body fat scale to track progress as it gives you a better idea of how much fat you're shedding relative to your overall weight.

Good luck,
Fausto

You don't have to be fat for it to hurt your knees. I ran cross country and track in high school. My knees are pretty much f$cked. I would recommend riding a bike.

Wow. Quick replies. Thanks! When I say "fatass," I don't mean I'm 400lbs or anything like that. In fact, my weight would probably be acceptable if more of it were muscle. I do doubt that running is bad for my knees (not due to my weight, anyway), I just have no stamina. Thanks for all the advice!

Yeah sodas really kill me. Cutting that out I lost several pounds. Also buy a Tai-bo tape (for rainy days), and the rest of the time jog, play sports, do situps, and get out more. Try to join a rec soccer or b-ball league if your city has one. Nothing like holding yourself accountable to team mates to induce yourself to excersize!

I gave up running cuz it hurt my back. Man, I was in good shape when I did run though. Now I try and do Biking and it's helped. You gotta push yourself though, just peddaling around isn't going to burn many calories--but--it is better than posting for help on anandtech in that regards. 😉

First of all eat less, and second of all stop eating junk.

In addition to those you should take up weightlifting to add on lean mass which will enhance your shape and raise your daily calorie burning as well. If you can't run much do cycling or a LOT of walking. Whoever said swimming must not have realized that most overweight people are too self-conscious to want to swim.

Excercise (ideally cardio and weights) + better food + less food = lost weight.

Once you lose the weight you can probably maintain with excercise & good food, and still eat a decent bit. Junk food and inactivity are probably doing you in.

Heh, we have quite the opposite goals. Anyway, the biggest problem is HABIT. Right now you are over weight because of your habits. The hardest part is to change your habits. I need to gain weight, and look at me, I'm still a skiny-ass 145lbs.. Although it's not *that* bad cause I've been going to the gym over the summer. I could still use 20-65lbs and not be fat at all, though.

Anyway.... it's the same no matter what your goal is. Routine and habit. Make yourself a schedule. Stick to it. If you just do stuff randomly, you may be able to lose some weight just cause you happened to do it often enough, but you won't see awesome results unless you are actually very determined. Losing weight is usually a very hard thing to accomplish. But you'll be happy and have no regrets once you accomplish it, if you do so properly.

Don't only do one type of exercise, or you'll be lacking in other ways. Do cardio every day, or 5 times a week. So, let's say you can only run for 1 or 2 minutes. Run for 1-2 minutes three or four times a day. Before/after meals (not RIGHT after, duh), to make it easy as a habit. Once you do that for a week, maybe two, you'll be able to increase the time you can run at once. So you'll be running 5, 10, 15, 20 mins .. Before you know it, you'll be running for hours and not breaking a sweat. I'd say after a good few weeks of solid running, you'll be on your way to being in very decent cardio-vascular shape.

You should start off with just running at first. Once you've done that a bit, hit the gym (but don't stop the running). Start off easy, and always remember to stretch before and after your workouts. Workout a variety of muscles, and don't work out the same ones every day. For example, do upper-body for one or two days in a row, then work out the abdominal area as well as the legs (although running will whip your legs into shape as well). I don't think i need to go into detail regarding specific muscle groups and which ones to workout how much, etc - just go to your gym, and go around each machine, try everything out. The ones you find hardest to do, are most likely to be the ones you should do the most, until they aren't so difficult anymore.

I can't stress enough the importance of your diet when trying to lose weight. Do not stop eating! You want to lose weight, but your health is just as important. If you don't already know very well how to eat healthy, consult your doctor. Cause if you aren't getting everything you need, you won't grow/adapt the way you should and you'll start to have problems. It'll be easiest to reach your goal if you follow a strict and healthy diet, along with your workout schedule. I would go into specific meal details, but I won't, because I'm not specialist/expert. So like I said visit your doctor/nutritionist and figure out what you gotta do.

Good luck, fatass! 😛 😉 😀

There was a SNL skit with Jim Carrey doing an infomercial about his weightloss product that was crystal meth. It was so funny! The slogan for it was "Ride the Snake!"

another vote for swimming. and if you don't know how, it doesn't hurt to learn, you never know when it'll come in handy.

Dieting does not work, calorie counting does not work.

<< Someone who wants to be healthy would not do this! A no carbs diet will cause you problems in the long term. you want to eat healthy and drink lots of water. >>

You have obviously never read Dr. Atkins book. Nowhere does he tell you not to eat carbs, other than the 2 week induction period in which he tells you to cut your carbs down to very low levels. The 300 grams of carbs a day that is recommended by the FDA is EXCESSIVE. Read his book thoroughly next time before you comment on it.

Low carb diets work. The trick is determining how many carbs you can eat a per day without triggering the mechanisms that cause weight gain.

cut out some carbs, make sure you eat your veggies and EXERCISE 30 mins a day4 times a week. I don't mean some half assed aerobics, I mean SWEAT and GASPfor 30 minutes a day 4 times a week. You will notice a change in a month or so.
