$1100.00? WTF?

I just had my hood straightened and painted after a piece of retread nailed it on the highway. It was $360.00CDN, and this was with the extra cost of pearl coat paint, and I got it done at the VW dealer. It looks perfect.

There's no need to replace a body panel for a small ding or scratch, that's just nonsense.

car mechanics are like laptop repair technicians: "the motherboard is shot, that'll be $700 for a new motherboard"

me: "wtf, the laptop aint even worth that much, no mainboard costs $700"
lappy tech: "we have to *special* order it from compaq, its proprietary"

$300 for a speeding ticket, insurance doesnt cover it, yet they raise your rates anyway. thanks uncle sam

You can ask for all the estimates you want. If I was the car owner, I would tell you to go screw yourself. Why should I, the person who got hit, have to go to any trouble for you? Once you said you would pay for it she is in the drivers seat. She has no responsibility to do anything past what she has done already.
Yes, but the thing is as mentioned below nobody knows if it's not just her uncle and he's overcharging by $500. It's a bad situation to be in where you say you'll pay, and it's bad where you're relying on another person to pay so that they don't tlel you to go to the dinigest part of town to fix your car!

Yes, we know it may be a $500 over estimate but he's still in no power in making her getting more estimates. He can ask... if shes nice she'll do it... but if I was her, I woudln't personally... it's not worth my time or effort. Shes nice enough to let you get off insurance on your choice. Personally, if I let someone choose to pay and avoid the insurance companies (which is more than nice already) and then had the audacity to ask for me to go around get more estimates, I would tell them to STFU and I'd go to insurance.

These are your options
1) Accept it and pay
2) go to insurance

Let your insurance handles it. That's why you pay for it in the first place. BTW, if this is your first time, they not going to rise your premium. BTW, bumper replacement is about right for that price.

Okay, so we decided to go through the insurance path...apparently we both have Triple A....which hopefully make things a little more convenient.

You guys have been really helpful and supportive though, I feel so much better reading all these posts. Thanks.

The sooner I can get past this the better.

If you scratch into the metal of the body panel it has to be replaced, you can't simply repaint it. If you did that to two panels, you're looking at two panels + paint.

Hey Viper....where did you come up with this gem of inaccuracy? Stick to talking about things you know something about. Body shops only replace panels if they absolutely have to and repainting panels where metal was exposed by a scratch is done daily in thousands and thousands of body shops.

1000 sounds just right. My friend had her door dented just slightly about half and inch deep and the estimate was almost 3000 LOL...I think the other guy almost sh!tted his pants because he was giving a fit over the phone saying he wont pay for the damages and the most that he would pay is 200 dollars. 🙂

Heh. Our frat house backs up to a fence, on the other side of which is a private high school's baseball/football field. We usually don't park there during baseball season, since we've had a few accidents with homeruns, but it hadn't happened in a while, and it couldn't happen to me, right? So I was walking back from class, and all other cars had been moved away, leaving mine by itself parked behind the house. I just kept looking in disbelief, nah, it didn't happen, everybody else must have moved for a reason. Well, I get to my car, and the back windshield is completely gone! One of my friends comes out the door, telling me he was guarding it. The kid who hit the homerun had come by after the game and had the audacity to ask if he could climb into my car to get the ball, which was sitting on my back floor. My friend basically told him to go fsck himself. I went and talked to the athletic director of the high school, and he told me to take it to a place, and have them send him the bill, no problem, the kid shouldn't have even hit that homerun. The first place told him a price he didn't like, the second place told me they would give me a used one (which didn't have the same badging on it that my original did), which I didn't like, but finally I took it to a third place the guy recommended, and it was done. The only problem was I had to leave my car out for one night with only plastic covering the back windshield (if any of you guys have ever driven through the south side of Chicago, near Bridgeport, but specifically 33rd and State, you will understand my concern), and another day when it rained (out 20 bucks for a car cover). Other than that, they were really good about taking care of it.

Oh, and BTW, go back to driving school and learn how to park better.

You're asking these guys, some of whom say you cannot repaint a metal panel on a car? {If you scratch into the metal of the body panel it has to be replaced, you can't simply repaint it. (Hint: car fenders, quarter panels, hoods, etc., are routinely fixed and painted, not replaced.)}

You ought to ask your insurance company.........and if you are under 24, I'd almost assure you this claim will impact your rates.....if not now, then the next claim. Some ins. cos. do have the policy to forgive the first claim. But $1100 seems a small amount to claim.....what's your deductible because you will have to cover that, you do know.

Sh!t, I hit my 1992 Passat and have a list of parts to change long as a marathon - all the body parts in the front are dust - and I had to pay about 4000$ for parts and about 500$ paint and body work. At a Volkswagen dealer.
1100$ seems expensive like hell to me.
Edit: Thanks God, the engine is OK

Just my 0.02$ thought

Ask for three estimates.... Just so you know, she'll probably get three estimates, and make you pay one of them, but then she won't get her car fixed and will just pocket the money. I had a friend whose truck was hit when a woman just driving down the street hit it. $1000 or so to fix it, but he didn't get the truck fixed.....
