I'm scared to go to sleep!

Alright, this has happened for 2 nights in a row now and I'm scared as sh!t to even close my eyes now...

On tuesday night/wednesday morning at some point in the night, I was either in the most realistic dream I've ever had, or I was asleep and yet my eyes were awake and I was conscious of my surroundings, or I was actually awake. I knew I was in bed and I looked over towards the dresser and I swear I saw what was an outline of my grandmother on the dresser. I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me, so I tried focusing yet I still saw her. Then it sounded like she said something, and I leaned up and said "What did you say?" (we just went over something in Psychology class about this, where you think someone is there and you believe you hear them say something). At that point I knew I was awake (again maybe just the most realistic dream I've ever had). I didn't think anything of it and went back to sleep.

What seemed to be just a few minutes later, I was awake again (realistic dream?) and this is when I got frightened. I could feel the sheets on me getting tighter and tighter around my body (like someone was pulling the sheets tighter over me). I couldn't move. I knew I was trying to move, and I just couldn't. I couldn't say anything either or scream. After about 30 seconds, it went away and I shot up out of bed.

I was so scared, I thought there was a ghost or something.

I wen't to lay down again and in about 5 minutes, I was paralyzed again. I couldn't move or scream. Finally I was able to get up and I just went on my day as usual (I had a Psychology test yesterday - which I got 90% on)

Anyway, when I went to bed last night, I was scared about what happened the previous night and actually tried staying awake. I got into bed at about 1:30. I first woke up at about 5. I keep thinking about that horrible feeling of being frozen and not being able to do anything, so I try not to fall asleep, and not think about it at the same time. I must have got up like 6 or 7 times that night. Then at 7:04 I knew I was totally awake. I got out of bed and was trying to remember something I had just thought about in my sleep, I was trying to figure out something witht the word "experience" but I couldn't think of anything. I went back into bed, and I woke up paralyzed again... I was so fscking scared this time! When it wen't away, I looked at the clock and it was 7:18.

I don't know what the fsck is going on, but I am terrified of going into that bed now. I've heard a little bit about that sleep paralysis, but not much. It's scaring me that I went into sleep paralysis within 14 minutes of lying down...

someone please help me...

I've had a few night terrors before. I actually think they are pretty cool the morning after. I haven't had one in a few years though.

from that site:

"HSPs are usually a vision of a small creature that sits on the victims chest. The creature then either compresses the chest or attempts to strangulate the victim. Almost all attacks have been reported by people sleeping on their backs."

I don't remember a creature being there, but I do remember thinking there was a ghost and I was on my back.

Actually, it's a common thing called SLEEP PARALYSIS. it usually happens when your sleep is disturbed, or you sleep, wake up for an hour, and then go back to skeep again. Try concentrating on movign a finger, than an arm, and then you'll snap out of it. Your brain put you into paralysis so you don't actually play out your dreams and hurt yourself.

<< I knew I was trying to move, and I just couldn't >>

This statement leads me to believe that you may have in fact been dreaming, during a REM state. At this point in your sleep you are paralyzed. This is were those nightmares of something scary and you not being able to fight/run/etc. occur.

I've had some pretty realistic dreams in the past couple of years. I'm convinced that whole thing about "pinch me, i think i'm dreaming" is false. I know for a fact that i CAN feel things in dreams, even the most minute detail.

BTW, when i read your title i was expecting something like "the clowns will eat me"🙂

Hope that helps,

If I was indeed in REM sleep, then how would I explain what happened the 2nd night. I knew it was 7:04 because I know I was awake. How did I manage to get into and out of REM sleep in 14 minutes? Is it possible I was in REM sleep, yet still have my eyes open and be conscious of the outside world? IE, my brain was asleep and my body was awake. That could explain why I knew it was 7:04, but the part of my brain that was sleeping was still in REM.

I know how the sleep cycles work and people ususally don't fall right into REM sleep unless they have been deprived of REM sleep, which I have not.

It's happened to me too. Paralized can't move, pressure on the chest, can't breathe. I know I was awake I was trying to move my arm over to turn on the lamp. Scared the crap outta me when it happend. One thing different about my expirence is that there was this weird ringing in my ears the entire time it was happening.

Thanks for the link GodBless, I have been having these 2 to 3 times a week for the past year, my wife and me were getting scared, had a couple of friends recommend I go see a shrink or someone who specializes in sleep disorders.

Drink half a handle of captain morgan....i guarantee that you will be out like a baby all night, and probably even the next day!!!

whoever said booze aren't the solution to any problem was unbelievably incorrect.

:Q Well, something of the paralysis sort happened to me once or twice. Its like my brain is very alert to the surrounding, but I cannot move or make myself even lift a finger. My body felt heavy and unable to respond.
