Without reading the thread, as we've had a ton of these recently, you will absolutely not save gas by shifting into neutral...you will waste it.

Ayup. Putting it in neutral, the computer keeps gas flowing to the engine to keep it running.

Letting off the gas the fuel injection will be shut off (as long as RPMs are above about 1500rpm).

Got a car with a computer display? Reset the gas mileage monitor to 0 and test it out.

Yet such a simple concept is wasted on the "If the engine is on, it's using gas" crowd.

This puts the evolution controversy to shame.

What year/model car? You'll save more gas by keeping it in gear and engine braking.

When current RPM > idle RPM while throttle position reads closed, the ECU will cut off fuel supply until current RPM == idle RPM.

If you just go into neutral and coast, the engine will be idling and consuming fuel.

If anyone wants to argue this, put a test light on the injector harness and watch the pulses get faster as you speed up, then disappear when you coast in gear, then come back on again at a certain idle threshold. At higher revs the light will probably appear full on until you back off and coast, then it should be full off.

You may be able to do this all under hood without actually moving the car, it depends if the ECU is watching the transmission or vehicle speed or not.
 
You can save more gas get in a bus and ride with all the rest of the little people. Expert's take: "Highly dangerous. You don't have your car under control," says Goss. (In other words, not all hypermiling techniques are good ones.) the only way to save gas in the manner in which you speak is to shut the car off. which if you read above is not a good idea.

Instead of posting this thread your time would have been better spent learning ways to decrease rolling resistance. Such as jacking up your tire pressures to near recommended limits. Or you could have been stripping as much weight as possible from your car. I could go on, but its kinda a dumb subject in my opinion and I'll just rant.

Idling for 1 hour burns nearly 1 gallon of gasoline.

For every two minutes a car is idling, it uses about the same amount of fuel it takes to go about one mile.

Myth #2: Idling is good for your engine. Reality: Excessive idling can actually damage your engine components, including cylinders, spark plugs, and exhaust systems. Fuel is only partially combusted when idling because an engine does not operate at its peak temperature. This leads to the build up of fuel residues on cylinder walls that can damage engine components and increase fuel consumption.

doesnt matter to me if they put their cars in neutral going down hills or even turning the engines off. if they wish to die in a car wreck by not having control of their vehicles instead of just using public transportation, car pooling or walking or even riding a bike to "save gas", then let them. hopefully they are way out in front of me, and not driving right behind me when they lose control.
 
Turning it to neutral does give a lower rev to the engine, thats for sure.
Definately will burn fuel, but lesser in a long run.
