I'm running PC2100 DDR. Should I lower my HTT setting?

I'm a little confused about what I should be changing here. My computer is pretty stable right now just running on the default settings but it does crash/freeze every once in a while and I'm wondering if it's due to my RAM running faster than spec. I'm also unable to run in Dual Channel mode but I think it's mostly because these are older sticks and aren't suitable for dual. I currenly have 2x 256MB Crucial PC2100 2.5-3-3-6 RAM. Would setting HTT to something lower than 1000Mhz basically run my RAM slow. I'm thinking the 1000HTT is 250Mhz x 4, so if I lower it to say 600 about it'll be closer to spec. Also, would I be better off manually setting the RAM speed on my motherboard (Asus A8V) or is leaving it to AUTO the best?

set the htt to 800mhz and see if that helps. I know on my system, if i run at 1000, it will freeze once in a while, but at 800, i can leave it on for as long as i want(been on for 2 months, havent restarted since).
