Hey ATOT! well, i've never gone to play paintball, but, a few of my friends have their own guns and go on a pretty regular basis. i'm figuring i'll go just to some place around here and use the rental gear, and see if like it first. If i do, i'll probably end up buying a nice mask, a tippmann 98 custom and I'm thinking about getting a 12oz tank... i'm not to sure what else i would need. What would you guys suggest for a beginner (sp?)

I need some tips from the paintball guru's :p. some people told me not get dirt in the barrel (thats common sense :)) ect. but i don't even really know the basics. like, is there anything in particular i should wear, i think a muscle shirt and gym shorts would be a bad idea :p can anyone tell me like, what i should do/shouldn't do and a little about the gun and how all that works. Thanks!

Go down to wal-mart and pick up the $70 brass eagle gun and some paint and go enter the biggest tournament you can find.

go to the paintball arena/warehouse/shack and see if they let you rent equipment. Try it out. Do use gloves, knuckle hits hurt. Baggy clothes do allow the ball to hit you and not break. I played in a cup once, felt way too uncomfortable so i took it off, got hit a couple minutes later and it didnt hurt at all. Usually your adrenaline is pumping that any hits feel like minor pinches. Bring crappy sneakers cuz it tends to get groddy in those places.

I wouldn't suggest the tippmann nor the 12oz tank, but that's probably cause I'm a baised mofo. A nice mask is a great idea btw. I'd recommend the JT-7 Flex IZE series (I'm a faithful owner of one). The mask breaks down and can be cleaned easily. Also, replacing the lens is pretty painless (replacement lens costs ~$25).

I'm not a fan of CO2 so the 12oz tank is out of the question as far as I'm concerned. I think it's a good idea for you to just get a good mask, some gloves, kneepads, and some experience on the field. Once you've played enough you'll be ready to purchase a quality marker. A tippmann would really be a stepping stone to a better marker IMO, so instead of wasting the money just wait a bit.

pants, yes; long shirt, no.

Getting shot hurts, some places more than others. You won't feel many shots that hit your chest or legs, but your neck will sting like crazy, your lower back will ping quite nicely too, and the insides of your arms and legs will bruise pretty darn easily.

I once shot a guy right in the neck. He started to bleed and unfortunately my paint was red so he didn't know what was blood and what was paint. Anyways, the wound ended up becoming a scar. So make sure any mask you buy has ample neck protection. As for nut shots, don't wear anything tight. Yes, you do feel the paintballs but they're minor pain since, yes, your adrenaline is going... unless you get shot really close, then it could hurt.

Try renting equipment a few times to find out if you like the sport. Tipmann makes good beginner makers that can take a lot of punishment. THe most importaint equipment you buy is the mask. If the mask is uncomfortable to wear more than 10 minutes then it is not the right one for you. If you really want to start playing then get knee pads so you can dive into bunkers and a neck gaurd.

The Basics:
1) Keep the barrel plug in the marker if you are not on the field or at the shooting range.
2) Keep you barrel pointing up off the field. This keeps liquid CO2 from entering the marker.
3) Have fun
4) Clean the marker right after from coming home from the field. I own 4 markers for the past 15
years and all of them are still in working order.
5) Your backyard is not a shooting range.
6) Read up on the sport. APG is a good magize

Phantom pump guns are badass. As long as your friends aren't professionals with crazy nice guns, then you can sacrafice a bit of shooting speed for the accuracy a nice pump gun brings to the table in the $200 range. Especially if you plan on playing in the woods.

Badasses wear wife-beaters and shorts when playing paintball. All others should wear at least a sweatshirt and jeans, if not a army jacket or something similar if it is available to you.
