I'm ready to splurge on a CPU

It's been five years and my Duron 1.3 GHz is still running slow. I figured it's time to let it go and set up a new system. Now I don't splurge too often and most of my budget will probably come from selling my current processor, motherboard and memory on ebay. So I'm looking for a CPU less than $50 if possible. Which camp should I go with: AMD or Intel?
 
Ready to splurge 50$ whole bucks ? Well, anything is going to be an upgrade over a 1.3ghz duron, but 50$ ? But I reckon it's best to go with Capitalizt suggested, if you overclock it to 2.6-3.0ghz, with your needs, I reckon you won't have to upgrade again for another 5 years 😛
 
The Celeron 1200 isn't bad if you intend to overclock it to the max, but at stock speeds the Athlon X2 4000+ is a better performer, especially in gaming.
 
I'll admit it's funny that the OP wants to 'splurge' on a $50 CPU, but let's face it, even a $50 CPU would be leaps and bounds better than the Duron 1.3GHz he currently runs. 😉

 
you can have twice the performance by paying less than twice the money, processors that are below $50 are not worth it unless you are really on tight budget. Buy cheaper motherboard with cheaper chipset like VIA or SiS. VIA with a dual core CPU will still be faster than Intel/nVIDIA/AMD chipset with a single core CPU. Of course, i really don't know whether VIA IGP is vista compatible.
 
E2140/2160 (60-70$) and a good P35 MB for 80-90$. Grab 2GB (35$) or 4GB (75$) or RAM and be on your way.
 
does your mobo do 133fsb? i'm decommisioning my 2nd oldest system - at it's core, the mighty AXDA2600DKV3C 2600+ 2133MHz 16x athlon, king of the 133mhz bus!!! that should pop right in and make your box seem like new!!! it gets 4996 cpu in aq3!!!

i feel your pain on having to shoot an old dog... it's kind of sad, since i just got a brand new 6800gs from pny in trade for a broken 6800oc, so it was like a new lease on life for the old girl... alas, even with the pinnacle of 133mhz fsb cpus, the vid card is now held back by the cpu (and the 1gb mem limit on the k7s5a)... and none of my kids or their friends will even play on the thing!!! this is a system that gets 2133 3d06's!!!

newegg has the abit ip35-e for $60 ar and slap in a $50 celly dc and oc the snot out of it and u will have a mouse that roars!!! for anything that u do on your current box it'll be way sufficient... i'm making an assumption that u r'nt a big gamer...

even better if u have a fry's locally... my latest cheapo build was a combo e4500/ecs gm945 mobo, paint the cpu to go 266mhz and 1.5v and have a 2.925ghz 2mb cache system for $118... or don't paint it and get 2.75 on stock voltage...

Yah I currently have a Shuttle AK32L mobo(133 MHz FSB), 384 MB PC133 and the Duron.




I was browsing Newegg late last night and saw 35 watts CPU from Intel and 45 watts from AMD. Holy snot balls, I said. That's what I want. It's within $50 and supposedly consume less power. The AMD Athlon 64 LE-1620 , I'm guessing LE stands for Leading Edge looks good.

I was reading people's opinions on these low wattage CPUs particularly with Intel as some say they still get hot and others say they are cool. Confusion aside I like the idea of having a low watt CPU. It won't need a high speed fan to cool it along with the noise. I could probably keep my current power supply as well. My Duron is rated at 55 watts nominal.

Given two 45 watt CPUs, one at 2 GHz and another at 2.4 GHz, do they both still consume the same amount of power?
 
i hate to say it, but "dude, you need a dell..."...

your old psu will have a 20 pin power connector (new mobo's use 24), and etc... so u will need to replace everything, most likely...

for what u r looking to get, there's a whole lot of prebuilts that meet your needs for a very reasonable price (not much more than u could do it for yourself)...

Yeah I have been tossing the idea of buying a prebuilt around myself. I have built every PC I've had for the past 10 years. If I were to upgrade today, the only things I could bring over would be my 300 gig drive and my nvidia 7950 GT OC. Sigh.

It's because the E2140 is discontinued and won't get getting any price cuts, while the E2160 just got a price cut.
 
i read splurge on a CPU thinking he was going to get a qx9650 or something then i see $50 CPU. save some money and get a new MB and the latest CPU. (at the time, whenever that is, that u have the money saved)
 
You know what guys, lay off already, $50 can cost a lot more to some people than 40 year old IT guys with inflated 6 figure incomes(and I'm not making a generalization about AT members, just pointing to a rather common if not majority position for members who would be especially less affected by budget). Does anyone actually know if he was trying to be sarcastic with the title or not?

OP: My next build will probably be with an E2160 or depending on how long it takes me to get around to it, it's nehalem counterpart. They're very good performing chips give their ~$70 price tag and notably faster than any of the celerons you're going to get for $10-20 less.

Hey, I'm a 50yr old IT guy with an inflated income and I resent that comment!! Hehe.

How about a nice little Biostar Tforce TF7025 AMD board for $70 and a dual core Brisbane 4000 for $60. If that Tforce is like my daily use TA690G, it is easy to overclock too if needed. Add some SuperTalent RAM from Eiwz. OEM 3800 Windsors are $49.99 at Newegg too. DDR2 below is 800, I used some 667 and it is $42 for 2x1GB.
