Compared to living in a 3rd world shit hole, sure. Compared to most first world countries, not so much. Not that I don't love it here or anything but I don't get the tunnel vision patriotism.
 
I think any western country would be fine, some probably better than the US when you consider overall quality of life for most of the population. But really, what we have in the US should be the minimum for every person in the world.

If you can manage to come-up with several photographic representations of what is great about America in ADDITION to a photo of the military, then you are proud to be an American.

If the military is the only thing you need to look upon in order to get your patriotic fix, then you're proud to be a military imperialist superpower.

It's like a class assignment: Go around your community taking pictures of things that you like about your community, and make a nice collage. Little Bobby's collage shows several photos from different angles, all of a tank sitting in front of the VFW with the flag in the background, and says "THAT, motherfuckers! Any questions? I didn't think so."

I dunno about proud. I didn't have much part in making myself an american after all. I feel very lucky to be an american though. I like america and I want it to stay an awesome place to live. That'll have to pass for patriotism I guess.

I'm proud to live in a smaller but more peaceful country - maybe because we have a much greater history has country.

Eventually americans will evolve and have another vision of their position in the world too.

The Founding Fathers dared us all to do something about it. I'm too chicken to take charge, I'll admit that much, but what they did was outright revolution and terrorism, and just like then, such activity is seen as extremely shameful by almost everyone you personally cherish.

They dared us all to do what they did if this country ever became what they hoped to avoid. It's a scary and dangerous thought, isn't it? I'm one to say it almost should happen, it's seemingly being begged for at this point, wouldn't you say?

The intelligent Americans have an accurate view of their (our) place in the world.

The unintelligent are as fallible here as they are in every other part of the world. They who are ignorant are found everywhere, and what they know of the world and their place in it is often equally as misguided as the bible-thumping, flag-shirt-wearing, lucky-to-have-a-10th-grade-education American.
