During my freshmen seminar (about magnets), my advisor gave me a bunch of neodymium magnets of varying sizes--cubes, spheres, and rings, and they work great for this. HDD magnets are flat and have the antimagnetic backing which makes it a little awkward to use.

Then you either built it wrong, or you are looking at it wrong. Mine works perfectly, infact I have two (a red one also) and they both produce an equal, if not better effect than in the video.
