Stock alot of trade paper backs, & alot of pokemon type cards & you might survive. Every shop I've known has closed down in the last ten years. It would be great if you had success, but the market is just a fragment of what it use to be. Maybe an online store would work.

There's a place by me called Jester's Playhouse... They sell comics, RPG stuff, magic cards, pokemon cards... they actually do good business. It's a place where a parent can drop there kid off from school and pick them up at 8. They have tables set up for people to play and have vending machines. Seriously... you can do alright.

Oh, that's what I'm planning to sell trade paper backs, rpg stuff, magic cards, pokemon type cards, etc.

have you researched the feasibility of your business in that area?

Agree, but only if you have sufficient start up funds.

I'm having this guy http://www.comtrac.net/cms/index.php?page=cp_startstore to do all the market feasibility in my area since this guy does his homework and pretty much gives me a break down . He's a Comic and game shop retail advisior. He's basically like you have X amount of house holds located in Downey (la county) CA they make an average income of Y amount of dollars. This is how much the city of Downey is willing to spend a month on comics. He's charges a couple thousand of dollars, but the investment is really worth it.
If he tells me that I should be able to survive opening a comic book shop then i'm going to open one. I'm not just going to jump on a location like that.

Okay - just as some others are alluding to - chances are a comic book store is not going to work. Kids just aren't interested in comics these days, this is the generation of online gaming. You may get a few stray kids and some adults who still are fans of comics but nothing to pay your bills.

However, if you really want to open up a comic store, I highly suggest you do it ONLINE. Take the money you would have used to lease out a store and fix it up, and get a good web designer. Take the money you would have spent setting up CC transactions, and spend a fraction of that on an online storefront.

PM me if you want any more suggestions involving an online store...

"Alpha Comics" Will help get you to the front of the phone book also which can't hurt.

Don't let all the kill joys in here deter you even for a second, it's the nature of the world, people will always try and stop others from success.

Where I lived last, there were two comic book stores within 2 miles of each other that I used to visit and both were doing very well, if you have a good store in a good location with a good selection then you have nothing to worry about.

isn't it all messed up now? don't publishers make very little on comics and just keep putting them out so they can rake in movie/video game royalties?

I wish you the best of luck. I would like to start up a comic book store, action figures, card games, rpg stuff, dice game etc.... Since you are in Vegas.... Topless Comics. That should get you some traffic 🙂

That's funny because many of my comic book and Magic-playing friends were married...with children. Then again, there were lots of people stopping by that had no hopes of having sex without paying...

I would avoid "Comicbook Store" as that is a dying business model. Here are some flexible suggestions:

Gamecenter - leaves you open to alter your business model down the road

The Secret Lair - superhero themed but doesn't peg you as a comic bookstore

Fortress Of Solitude - Might be too nerdy even for the nerds

Fantasy World - Might draw in too many pervs...

How about:
"Last Comic 'book' Standing"
or
"Atomic Comics"

There's a local comic book store that was barely making rent around here, then the Pokemon card craze hit and his store stayed packed ever since. I drive by his store admiring his Viper in the parking lot every day.

I guess the key is to stay on top of anything that's popular. You have to "sell out". You can't have the attitude like, "Oh my store is too cool for that"
If it's pokemon cards that they want, then pokemon cards is what you supply them with.
If strawberry shortcake comics are the hot item, you better make sure you sell them.

When I was in elemnetary school and middle school, comic book stores were the gangout spot. I don't know how popular comic book stores are today with children. Just make sure you carry plenty of playing cards like Magic or whatever. When I was in middle school, I would go to the local comic book store "Comics to Astonish" every Saturday morning for Magic tournaments. That was a fun time.
