I'm on my way to the library, anyone have a few suggestions on a good scifi/vampire/fast paced/thought provoking novel??

Its the slow time of year in my department and I 'm bored to death.

Can anyone recommend a really exciting sci fi novel or maybe something good with vampires? (Anne Rice started me on this vampire trend)

Speaking of vampires is the book Queen of the Damned any good?

Queen of the Damned was not done any justice by the film. I read it years ago when I was on a A.Rice kick. One of the better ones, IMHO. :)

This might be the wrong genre, but there is new book called "Bone Walk" by Kevin Howe that's getting some attention in fantasy circles (love saying that). It's a quest story in the same strain as LOTR.

Neither these is a vampire novel but both very good reads:

The Mummy - Anne Rice : Loved this one!

My Soul to Keep - Tananarive?? Due : Immortality told like never before coming soon to the big screen

George R. R. Martin's Dying of the Light. For something a bit lighter, Harry Harrison's Bill, the Galactic Hero (the original, not the follow-ons).

Read Dracula by Bram Stoker. Classic novel and very intriguing with lots of stuff to think about (degradation of Victorian ideals, the purpose of Renfield, the relation of the real Count Dracula and the one found in the novel, etc.).

Good Sci Fi with some thought provoking ideas behind them:

Orson Scott Card - Enders Game
Robert A Heinlein - Time Enough For Love
Robert A Heinlein - Starship Troopers
Robert A Heinlein - Stranger In A Strange Land
Ray Bradbury - The Illustrated Man
