I subscribed for a year and let it run out. The service was about the same as subscription, so I didn't re-subscribe. Forums still fast enough for me on the regular account. The ads don't bother me as I never read them anyway. You could put 1000 ads on a website and I wouldn't bother reading any of them.

it's been almost 2 years since they starts subscription service?? OMG, that's hard to believe.

nice date btw, 11/01/01

Yep, it was first announced by the man himself on 11/01/01.

At first I subscribed so the forums would load faster, now they both load quickly. I definitely like the 1,000 PM's I go through that in about 45 days then I export and start again from fresh.

Now I subscribe for the PMs, NO ANNOYING FSCKING TOP OR SIDE BANNERS (I've seen them on my wife's PC and they're hideous) and most importantly to support the AT forums. Bandwidth ain't cheap.

I am disappointed though, I've heard the much ballyhoo'd new features coming ... nothing since then (other than they were testing them out).

Yes, I want my added features. They were supposed to add a chatroom...

I was set to join when I got edited and then banned for something completely benign that a "subscriber" complained to mods about. I'm still not sure I want to be part of the moral majority here for that reason.

what the hell is the point.

PM's can be replaced with email.
ads we see everywhere and ignore anyways.
and who cares about a 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001 msec increase in speed.

This is actually one of the reasons I didn't renew. From day one, we heard "AND MORE TO COME!". I'm all for supporting the forums, but for now, I'll click some ads. Though if I start trading on the FS/FT board a bit more again I'll probably subscribe again. For that board it's virtually a no-brainer. 1000 PM limit, full-text search (perhaps THE most underrated feature), and the key to the executive washroom...

I started a thread about this, trying to gather a list of legitimate reasons to renew. Nobody could give me a reason to renew, other than the token "help the board out". I'm sure Anand is doing quite well financially and doesn't really need everyone to subscribe to the forums. I personally think a more fruitful approach might be to add areas that only subscribers can access, sort of an insider's content. ESPN is an example of a big company that has done this successfully.

All depends on what you're looking for.
  • -- In the case of FS/FT, Pm's offer a semi-objective, trackable means of communication that isn't on either user's machine.
-- One often un-touted feature of the subscription is the full-text search, which can be HUGE when you're looking for something on the forums. (I'm assuming that it's still a subscriber-only feature).
-- The ads are convenient when they're not around, but yeah, no huge deal.
-- Again, not a huge deal since it seems they've been able to up the bandwidth cap on the non-subscriber side.

Hmm, maybe only subscribers can access archived threads or somethin'? Give non-subscribers access to only the threads in the last couple weeks/months?

An idea might be to make certain forums read-only unless you subscribe, ala Ars Technica's Velvet Lounge Forum (which is basically equivalent to the girl/guy/relationship threads here in ATOT). The same could be done for hot deals, you can browse all you want but to contribute you have to be a subscriber. I don't know, what do you guys think?

Your subscription details are as follows:

Subscription Start Date: August 07, 2002
Subscription End Date: August 07, 2003

Your subscription runs out in 50 days. :(

I'm down to 43 days. I've only been doing it 3 months at a time IIRC.
