None of us siblings, or our parents have allergies or asthma, or so I thought. My doctor was certain my coughing was due to asthma and prescribed the standard regimen of prescriptions for it. Turns out they haven't helped a bit. The interesting thing is, my youngest son will sneeze after eating chocolate.
When I was around four years old, I was perpetually sick with some kind of illness; bronchitis, sinusitis, ear infections, asthma type respiratory problems, rashes, fevers, etc. Our family physician referred us to an allergy specialist, who then ordered one of those 'prick' tests, can't remember the proper name of the test, but they plot out this grid on your back, then prick the skin with dozens of common allergens, one allergen per 'square'. I had a localized reaction to something like 40+ different allergens.
I was too young to remember all the details, but I know that my parents had to go through the house and remove everything which contained the products and/or allergens to which I tested positive. The house from the ceiling to the floors had to be washed and vacuumed. Even blankets and clothes which contained wool had to be bagged up and put in the attic because I was allergic to wool. The dogs and cats had to go. I couldn't eat all kinds of foods, including milk and chocolate. I was even allergic to cold temperatures! Seriously, there is such a thing. If I went outside in freezing temps, no skin could be exposed to the cold air. Anything that was exposed to the cold air, would within minutes become a big red welt or hive.
I lived on Actifed and Benadryl for about three years. Then around eight or so, all my allergies disappeared, with the exception of cat fur and cat saliva. I still can't be around cats much, I get a skin rash plus hay fever type symptoms.
I have from time to time, once per year about, broke out into welts and hives of undetermined cause. I will just wake up in the middle of the night, and my skin feels all warm and flushed. I think nothing of it, its not really that bad. So I get up to go pee, and nearly startle myself looking in the mirror. My lip will be blown up twice its size, my eye lid half swollen shut, big knots or hives on my forehead, abdomen, and arms. Within an hour or two it begins to resolve. I woke up one night and had such disseminated hives that I went to the hospital, but 30 minutes after getting there they began to go away, so I left. I don't 'feel' bad and have never had any swelling in my throat or tongue, just get these itchy and 'hot' hives all over the place for a couple hours.
I am told that childhood allergies which seem to 'automagically' resolve themselves by adolescence have a fair to good chance of returning with a vengeance around 50. Yippie! Some thing else to look forward to.
