If I had to give up caffeine I think I would shoot myself.
You don't want to be around me when I'm in coffee withdrawal. I'm, well...ornery. 😀

you want to wake up? Eat an apple every morning. Wakes you up better than coffee ever will.

Good luck. I think coffee tastes like sh!t, so I don't have too much trouble staying off it. 😉

As for you, decide for yourself - considering the benefits and the disadvantages - whether it is worth it or not to deprive yourself of the drink.

It might make one positive New Year's resolution, if I can stay off it. Any ideas for sustitutes or other reasons I should stay on the wagon?

Green tea is a great substitute. Its got about 1/3 the caffeine of coffee, and is great for metabolism. I add honey or sugar, though, as it isn't the best tasting stuff.

I have tried coffee several times, but have no need for it.

I do prefer a good herbal tea every now and then.

I never have been a tea drinker, I should try chamomille (sp) one day.

Coffee is good in the winter, not a fan in the summer. Drink sweet tea year round though. My friends mom makes the best damn sweet tea, it would be a sin to quit drinking that stuff...

God, how can you drink that stuff? It tastes awful and does nothing for me in terms of how awake I am. The occasional cup of tea and soda is what I stick to. If you need waking up, have a cold shower and listen to some pumping techno/rave music in the morning. It's impossible to feel sleepy after that.

Just got back from a Chinese buffet, where I had three tiny cups of hot tea. Tasted kind of bland and weak, so it wasn't even worth breaking my "caffeine fast" for it. All in all, I'm not missing it too bad now. Made a couple cups for my wife this morning, and though it would have been nice to have, I didn't crave it. I sure don't miss the heartburn. Haven't taken any more of those Aciphex tablets and there are no more "Tums" in the house. Got a little tinge of heartburn from a butter slathered, English muffin, but not bad.

Damn, I'm surrounded by premium chocolates, home made fudge, chocolate cake and chocolate cookies, including Nabisco Pinwheels! It's hard to resist, but since Sunday night, I've only had three pieces of Hershey's.

The reason for the experiment, was to see if I had an allergic reaction to the chocolate, coffee or caffeine in either of them. The reaction is what my doctor thinks is an "Asthma induced cough", which has not responded to normal treatments. Got a 4 hour respiratory test on the 14th, so that gives me a lot of time to try and figure it out myself. Had this chronic cough for over six months, so it will be nice to finally get it figured out. Sure hope I don't have to give up something like chocolate though... I'd rather be coughing!

i drink coffee daily, but i'm not addicted to it. the proof? while i was in scandinavia for two weeks, i only drank coffee like three times a week because the lattes there aren't that great 😛 i love the taste of coffee though...starbucks capuccinos m'mmm

Hah, still off coffee, but recent stress has caused me to fall off the cocoa wagon 😱

All x-rays, blood and pulmonary tests have come back OK. Seeing a pulmonary specialist Friday. In the mean time, I'll stay off coffee... maybe for good. No chance of giving up chocolate, food of the Gods!

Here's an interesting chocolate situation. My youngest son has asthma. My sister's daughter has allergies and my brother's boy has asthma. None of us siblings, or our parents have allergies or asthma, or so I thought. My doctor was certain my coughing was due to asthma and prescribed the standard regimen of prescriptions for it. Turns out they haven't helped a bit. The interesting thing is, my youngest son will sneeze after eating chocolate. Just once, no big deal, but we all thought that was pretty funny. Recently, I noticed I will sneeze after eating chocolate. I do it about 20% of the time, and my son does it about 60%. One time I sneezed when I was about to unwrap a Snickers bar, and I doubt there's even much cocoa in those darn things! Is that some kind of allergy, or what? 😕

Cool picture; it reminds me of the little bowl of those sour skittle things that I had on my desk. Unfortunately, they're terribly addictive, and they make sores in my mouth (could they be very acid or something?) Anyway, they're almost gone, and I told mom that she needs to help me enforce my diet by not buying any more of the things. 😱

Glad to hear about the tests coming back ok.

That's a weird allergy, and one that must suck to have. 🙁

A friend of mine can down 5-6 cans of soda in an 8 hour work day

Is that suprising? I can do that in one sitting, IE dinner.

Try Pero. It takes theplacve of my coffee cravings. No coffee in it. But you make it like an instant. It's a breakfast drink. Ihave one, maybe two cups in the morning, tops.

Just an idea. 😉

I'm not so sure it's an "allergy" to chocolate. It just sort of triggers a sneeze for some reason. No hives, coughing or wheezing. Just one sneeze and it's over. It's really kind of funny.

I'm not sure how long I will be able to stick with this. Coffee is harmless in moderation I'm sure, but I'm unable to do that. The indigestion from it is unreal, yet I'll end up sipping an hours old, cold cup even while my stomach is flaming! It's ridiculous. And the headache you get from doing without tells you something is a little twisted. I've heard that a lot of post operative patients suffer from headaches after surgery, not from the anesthesia, but from the caffeine withdrawal.

Pero might be worth a try, thanks! It might be OK at home, but I'll still be stuck if I'm at dinner somewhere. Man, Friday night we went to dinner at Perkins where I had the classic, eggs, potatoes, bacon and... water to drink. Ugh. I think in the future I'll make exceptions in cases like that!

Coffee in moderation is fine. Nothing like the smell of fresh ground/brewed coffee. If you love it so much and it's not the cause of your allergy, go back to it if you want.

Hah! Still on the wagon! Went to Perkins the other evening and I had Coke for my beverage. It's not the same, of course, but I didn't miss it. I haven't even bothered with tea. This is working out better than I thought. Guess the old habit is over. How 'bout that? :Q

Isn't caffeine reasonably healthy- actually good for you - in limited amounts? Eitherway I consume too much of it. I love it.

I'm not concerned about caffeine, it's the heartburn that tears me up! Tea would be fine, but it's such a hassle to make, that I won't bother. Maybe I'll get that next time I'm at a restaurant.

When I was around four years old, I was perpetually sick with some kind of illness; bronchitis, sinusitis, ear infections, asthma type respiratory problems, rashes, fevers, etc. Our family physician referred us to an allergy specialist, who then ordered one of those 'prick' tests, can't remember the proper name of the test, but they plot out this grid on your back, then prick the skin with dozens of common allergens, one allergen per 'square'. I had a localized reaction to something like 40+ different allergens.

I was too young to remember all the details, but I know that my parents had to go through the house and remove everything which contained the products and/or allergens to which I tested positive. The house from the ceiling to the floors had to be washed and vacuumed. Even blankets and clothes which contained wool had to be bagged up and put in the attic because I was allergic to wool. The dogs and cats had to go. I couldn't eat all kinds of foods, including milk and chocolate. I was even allergic to cold temperatures! Seriously, there is such a thing. If I went outside in freezing temps, no skin could be exposed to the cold air. Anything that was exposed to the cold air, would within minutes become a big red welt or hive.

I lived on Actifed and Benadryl for about three years. Then around eight or so, all my allergies disappeared, with the exception of cat fur and cat saliva. I still can't be around cats much, I get a skin rash plus hay fever type symptoms.

I have from time to time, once per year about, broke out into welts and hives of undetermined cause. I will just wake up in the middle of the night, and my skin feels all warm and flushed. I think nothing of it, its not really that bad. So I get up to go pee, and nearly startle myself looking in the mirror. My lip will be blown up twice its size, my eye lid half swollen shut, big knots or hives on my forehead, abdomen, and arms. Within an hour or two it begins to resolve. I woke up one night and had such disseminated hives that I went to the hospital, but 30 minutes after getting there they began to go away, so I left. I don't 'feel' bad and have never had any swelling in my throat or tongue, just get these itchy and 'hot' hives all over the place for a couple hours.

I am told that childhood allergies which seem to 'automagically' resolve themselves by adolescence have a fair to good chance of returning with a vengeance around 50. Yippie! Some thing else to look forward to.
